His Invitation

“There is no experience of pain or insult we might know that hasn’t wrung the heart of Christ—and because He knows such struggles, He invites us to come to Him as we experience them ourselves.’”

He Will Not Go Back On His Word

“Through the Spirit’s power, we must be willing to take up our crosses and follow Jesus through death, knowing that in the new heavens, we will be sated, justice will roll down, and suffering and evil will be no more. We need more than a resilient patience. We need a resurrected faith, where we see dry seasons, evil, and desolation not as deviations from God’s blessing but as part of the cycle of death and resurrection that happens a million times through the trajectory of a life.

And more than that, God has always been with his people even when his face has been hidden. The origin of all truthful promise keeping, he will not go back on his word; he will never leave or forsake us.”

Not in Charge

“When it comes to irritations, it helps if I remember that I am not in charge of my day…God is. One of His preferred methods of training is through adjustments to irritations.”

The Balance of Grace and Truth

“Christ’s heart is equally grieved by grace-suppression and truth-suppression, by grace-twisting and truth-twisting. Truth without grace is legalism. Grace without truth is deception. Without truth there is no need for salvation. Without grace there is no hope for salvation.

Since Jesus was the perfect embodiment of grace and truth, we can’t bring glory to Christ by separating the two. We must embrace a gospel that is as full of grace and truth as Jesus is.”

Substitution

“Unlike our halting attempts to make up for the wrongs we’ve done, the atonement Christ has made is total and final …

The grace of this atonement lies in its vicariousness—meaning, atonement has been made for you but not by you. This is why Christians talk fondly and frequently of substitution. In the final trial of life’s courtroom, Jesus takes our seat and accepts the verdict due us. He substitutes himself for you and me—not only absorbing our condemnation but also lending us his own righteousness. As a result, you and I are set free. When folk musicians sing about being washed in the blood of the lamb, this is what they are getting at: an inversion of judicial prudence so profound that when it’s grasped, its subjects are doused in astonishment and gratitude of the most generative kind.”
