AI systems have more than one way to learn about your business.

Semrush breaks the information flow into four areas:

🔵 Training data: Public web content and other sources used when models are trained.
🔵 Live retrieval: Current information pulled from the web or search indexes when an AI system needs fresh context.
🔵 Licensing partnerships: Content supplied through agreements with platforms and publishers.
🔵 User-initiated data: Files, connected tools, or other information users bring into an AI interaction.

For marketing teams, the takeaway is practical: your website matters, but so does the information about your brand across the wider web.

Check crawlability. Keep your brand information consistent. Build credible third-party mentions. And make sure the content you want found is accurate and current.

That gives AI systems more reliable information to work with when your business is relevant to a question.

What people say about your business online can influence how AI describes and recommends you.

That includes reviews, Reddit discussions, customer stories, forums, and other third-party sources you do not control.

For business owners, the practical takeaway is simple: your reputation is now part of your AI visibility.

If customers consistently describe the same strengths, service quality, or experience, that gives AI systems more evidence to work with. If the information is weak, outdated, or inconsistent, the picture can get murkier.

You do not need to manufacture conversations.

Focus on delivering an experience people want to talk about, encourage genuine reviews, and make sure your own website clearly supports the same facts.

Cost per lead should not be the only number used to judge Local Services Ads after the migration.

Google Ads will tell you how much you spent, how many charged leads you received, and the average cost of those leads. Your CRM and sales records need to complete the picture.

Track what happens after the inquiry:

🔵 Qualified lead rate
🔵 Appointment rate
🔵 Response time
🔵 Close rate
🔵 Customer acquisition cost
🔵 Booked revenue and gross profit

A lower cost per lead can look positive while customer acquisition cost rises because those cheaper leads are less likely to book or buy.

The migration is a good point to connect campaign reporting with actual sales and financial performance. That gives the team a better basis for deciding which services deserve more budget.

LinkedIn’s new AI-content reporting option is not a simple “AI detected, reduce reach” button.

When someone selects “seems like AI slop,” that feedback primarily changes what they see in their own feed. LinkedIn says no single report determines distribution, and safeguards are in place to prevent individual feedback from unfairly targeting another member.

The bigger issue for marketers is audience tolerance.
If many people repeatedly signal that generic, low-substance content is unwanted, the platform gains clearer information about what users do not want to see. LinkedIn is also notifying creators who receive a high volume of these reports.

That puts more pressure on brands to publish posts grounded in real experience, useful opinions, specific examples, and knowledge their audience cannot get from another generic summary.

AI can support production. The reason to read still has to come from the people behind the business.

Showing up in ChatGPT is one thing. Being recommended for the right buyer need is more valuable.

That depends on the wider picture AI can find about your business.

🔵 Are your services clearly explained?
🔵 Do reviews, directories, partner profiles, and other third-party sources support those claims?
🔵 Is your business information consistent across the web?
🔵 Can search and AI systems access the pages that matter?

Those signals work together.

For marketers, the goal is not simply to earn an AI mention. It is to make sure the right prospects can find accurate, credible information about your business when they are comparing options.

Then measure what happens next: referral traffic, qualified inquiries, sales conversations, and lead quality.

That is where AI visibility starts to become commercially useful.

Traditional search results can show several pages that repeat the same facts. An AI-generated answer has less reason to do that.

Ahrefs examines Google’s information gain patent, which describes a system that can remove information the user has already been given and surface something new instead.

That creates an interesting content challenge.

A page may cover the topic accurately and still contribute little if every important point has already been explained elsewhere. Original research, proprietary data, firsthand experience, and specific insights give the page something harder to replace.

There is an important distinction here: Google has not confirmed that a literal information gain score is currently part of its ranking or AI systems.

The practical lesson still holds. Content has a stronger reason to exist when it contributes something beyond the existing consensus.

Your website can rank well in Google and still be absent from AI-generated recommendations.

That makes AI visibility worth measuring separately.

HubSpot’s AEO guidance recommends tracking a few practical signals: how often your brand is mentioned, how often it’s recommended, your share of voice, the prompts where you’re missing, and the sources AI systems cite when answering those questions.

The source mix is especially useful.

If competitors keep appearing because review sites, industry articles, forums, or other trusted sources mention them more consistently, that gives your marketing team somewhere specific to investigate.

AI visibility shouldn’t be a guessing exercise. Track where your brand appears, where it doesn’t, and what sources may be influencing the difference.

Google’s “Discussions and forums” feature is showing up often enough that marketers should be paying attention.

Ahrefs analyzed 145 million U.S. search results and found the feature in 11.7% of them. Reddit appeared in 87.8% of those U.S. results, while the worldwide figure was 83.9%.

There’s another useful signal in the data: 43.2% of these appearances came from searches containing five or more words, and 98.7% had informational intent.

For businesses, that makes community research increasingly useful.

Look at the forums, groups, and discussion sites where customers ask detailed questions about your market. Those conversations can show you what people are comparing, what they’re confused about, and where your own content may be missing useful answers.

And if you participate, contribute first. Ahrefs specifically recommends learning the community and avoiding purely promotional activity.

That’s a much better strategy than trying to manufacture mentions.

How does your approach to AI compare with businesses of a similar size, industry, or region?

That is one of the useful outcomes behind WSI’s 2026 AI Business Insights Survey.

Participating businesses will receive a benchmark against similar organizations when the findings are published. That gives leaders something more useful than judging their progress in isolation.

A benchmark can help reveal where the business is ahead, where peers are moving faster, and which areas deserve more attention.

The survey takes around seven to eight minutes and is now open to business owners.

The quality of AI content often depends on what happens before the prompt.

Ahrefs’ content team starts with the human input: who the piece is for, what it needs to say, and what evidence or experience they can bring that isn’t already everywhere else.

Then AI gets involved.

That source material might be an interview, internal data, a real experiment, customer insight, or a point of view worth defending.

The useful lesson for marketing teams: don’t use AI to replace the thinking. Use it to help turn better thinking into stronger content.
