We Lost One of a Kind
We were saddened to hear of the recent death of our founder, James D. “Jim” Cooney.

Jim started Cooney and Associates (now CWA Strategic Communications) in the summer of 1986 after a successful development and communications career at the College of Santa Fe, PNM, the UNM Alumni Association and, earlier, the University of Notre Dame, where he attended college.

Jim was committed to working with clients whose causes would improve the quality of life in New Mexico. He was passionate about making the public aware of and causing them to care about everything from preventing DWI to early invention for children with developmental delays, water conservation, stopping elder abuse and the unique Native American culture and their accomplishments (specifically, Native American Olympians). He counseled some of our state’s leading institutions, including Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, the office of the New Mexico Attorney General and numerous city, state and federal government agencies.

Jim particularly excelled at reaching diverse audiences through educational, informative and compelling long-form videos. His programs were viewed by hundreds of thousands of New Mexicans, aired on the local PBS affiliate, KNME Channel 5, and are partially responsible for helping outlaw drive-up liquor windows, funding needed care for our most vulnerable babies and toddlers, and helping Albuquerque dramatically cut its water usage.

A true Irishman, Jim was never without a twinkle in his eye, a funny story at hand and a kind and compassionate spirit, assisting anyone he met who was in need. He loved animals, caring for miniature horses, Great Pyrenees dogs, a miniature Dachshund and Golden Retrievers. He was a fun, motivational and inspirational spark at our agency, and was missed immediately upon his retirement in 2010.
