I had the honor of joining a panel discussion during the historic Gala Dinner this past weekend. It was an inspiring and humbling experience to engage with the accomplished and visionary diaspora community—leaders I greatly admire and learn from.
During the discussion, I shared a call to action that I believe reflects a necessary shift in the way we approach sustainable development:
We must move toward prioritizing local sourcing and community-led needs assessments as a core principle of our development efforts.
This shift is not just timely—it is essential. It offers a path to narrowing persistent gaps related to financing, addresses growing criticisms of aid dependency, and responds to the increasing demand from recipients for programs that empower self-sufficiency rather than perpetuate reliance on food aid and external relief.
By embedding community engagement at every level of the Socio-Ecological Model and applying systems thinking from the inception of any initiative, we can co-create solutions that are locally driven, structurally sound, and globally resonant.
This is the paradigm shift that envisions—and one we all must champion.
