Woodstown Fall Festival to take place this Sat. September 26th

The festival officially opens at 10AM on the last Saturday in September as the crisp fall air carries whiffs of kettle corn and other delicious foods prepared by vendors and local restaurants.

Did you know? The Salem Friends Meeting House on East Broadway has stood since 1772. It's still an active meeting house today and holds the longest continuous meeting record in New Jersey, with Salem's Quaker congregation tracing back to John Fenwick's 1675 colony. During the Revolution, British troops used the grounds as headquarters while seizing Tory property nearby.

An interesting characteristic of the grounds:

Look down at the sidewalk out front and you'll spot another piece of history: an access door to a large underground water cistern that stored water for the purpose of fighting fires. The cistern is made of brick and was constructed in the mid 1800’s.. The hatch cover is inscribed with the date of 1870.

Penns Grove soccer weathers Overbrook to extend best start in years

PINE HILL – It was a long, wet bus ride back to campus after the match, but it gave the Penns Grove soccer team a chance to reflect.

The Red Devils outlasted Overbrook 4-3 Tuesday for their fourth straight win, their longest winning streak since 2022. You’ve got to go back before 2010 to find the last time they started a season 5-1 and the conversation they had on the ride back home attempted to put things in perspective.

Child S*x Abuse Material Charge, Assault on Corrections Officer, String of Thefts Mark Pennsville’s Early September Arrests

PENNSVILLE — Pennsville Police Department‘s arrest summary for the first half of September lists 21 total incidents between Sept. 1 and Sept. 15, all adults, according to the department’s report. Among the most serious: a 19-year-old Pennsville Township woman was charged with promoting obscene material and selling or receiving child sexual abuse material; a Willingboro man was arrested on five separate counts of violating a court order in one incident; and a Camden man facing an aggravated assault charge is also accused of throwing bodily fluids at a corrections employee.

Freshman leads Woodstown girls to fourth straight win

WOODSTOWN — Woodstown freshman Korynn Hernandez hurdled an Audubon defender at the top of the 18 box like Saquon Barkley, then planted her foot on the other side and fired a shot past a surprised goalie for her 11th goal of the season. It touched off a five-goal eruption over the next 26 minutes that carried the Wolverines to a 7-1 mercy-rule win.

It was their fourth win in a row.

Risen from the Ashes; the 1720 Darkin House a Fire Uncovered

ELSINBORO — Drive down Amwellbury Road in Elsinboro Township today, and you will pass a brick farmhouse, a classic 18th-century home: an old Flemish bond brick base, a small kitchen wing, and old as well as new farm buildings beyond the house. What you cannot see from the road is that this house spent roughly two centuries hiding its true age under layers of paint and stucco until a sudden fire in 1942 forced it to reveal its secrets.
