One of the top things business owners should look at is their Point of Sale and Payment Processing.

Most owners let their business sit paying almost 3% of their card revenue for a Point of Sale and Payment Processor that they either don't use the features of or actually don't like the features of.

Off the bat, a business owner can save about half of that. Half!!! That is moving 1.5% of revenue from top line to bottom line.

Is it always worth it to do this? Nope. Especially, if you are below 50k in revenue.

If you are using the tools of your POS like a Square and you use their marketing systems then you probably get a good value out of that almost 3%.

If you aren't? It is probably time to take a look and see if it is worth it to switch.

Think of your top features you would love to have in a POS, how much money is currently going to your POS and Payment Processor, and evaluate if it is time for a change.

If you would like help looking at Point of Sales then hit me up! If you want help looking at Payment Processors then I'll try to point you to the right place.

I have noticed a weird trend between marketing and community development.

Going to community events and getting involved is becoming more of a focus for me. At the core these are called community development, but only by government and nonprofit agencies.

Businesses are constantly working on getting more customers. That is called marketing by anyone who is educated in business. (Some business owners manage to figure it out themselves without ever being taught. Seriously impressive how they do it all through trial and error.)

You would think these two are unrelated, but really they are the same. The people who do boots on the ground work seriously helping their communities or marketing their business? They have no strategy besides doing what they know works.

The very large organizations and businesses? They spend a ton of time on strategizing community development and marketing. They put a ton of effort in so long term returns are "assured" and everything works as efficiently as possible.

Would you like to guess which one works? Neither.

If you are in either of these industries you probably thought the method that sounded like yours works. I'm sorry to say that I have seen both fail.

Statewide grants that are going to completely change the economy putters out, because employees are in meetings half the time. Grassroots movements and businesses failing because they were focusing on the wrong thing.

Strategy without proportionate ex*****on is useless; ex*****on without strategy is risky.

Keep this in mind next time you are stuck in a meeting or doing something without knowing why.

The absolute worst mistake you can make when hiring someone to make your website is this:

Not asking what specific effects it will have on your business within the context of your online presence.

If your online presence isn't doing anything to create awareness, then you need SEO. (depending on the market)

If you have a crazy good social presence, then you need a high-converting site to take advantage of it. Copywriting, Branding, Web Design.

If you want to sell on your website, then you need a functional and easy to use system. Development, UX.

If you have nothing, then you need a website that is good all around.

You should hire someone that matches what you need in your website.

Remember this: A website that looks good is useless if it doesn't help your business. A website that has features you want is useless if no one uses them.

If you have been burned by a marketing provider then it probably isn't their fault...

Most marketing people conduct very narrow services with the mindset of working for decent sized companies. They do things like social media management, videography, web design, etc without helping you understand the big picture. That works great when you have an in house marketing person who gets it, but for truly small businesses... it is a waste of money.

I focus on getting the core strategy figured out first and making sure any funds I ask for are put to the best use for your business. Sometimes that means going small in one area so others I don't help with can be focused on.
