U-Turn (1997) 🎬

In this memorable and stressful scene, desperate Bobby Cooper (Sean Penn) uses a public payphone to call his bookie/creditors back home. Already missing two fingers from a previous enforcement visit, Bobby is given a brutal ultimatum: deliver $30,000 by the following day, or they’ll return to cut off his remaining three fingers.

Today, movie fans frequently visit this spot along Main Street in Superior, Arizona. While the prop payphone is long gone, the intersection remains a popular stop for local film-location fans. Nearby, a local crew member who worked in the movie’s art department has preserved a collection of U-Turn memorabilia that visitors can check out.

The Hunted (2003), starring Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Toro, is an action thriller directed by William Friedkin. Part of the film was shot in downtown Portland, Oregon, including a memorable chase sequence at the Ira Keller Fountain, located across from the Keller Auditorium. The film uses the fountain’s distinctive geometric concrete waterfalls as a dramatic backdrop during the intense urban pursuit before the chase continues toward the Hawthorne Bridge.

Interesting and scary story is that we found a machete blade stashed here under the fountain, hidden in the square concrete cutout seen in the back. Zoom in to our picture it can be seen.

The Exploding Whale! The first-ever viral news story!
In 1970 a beached whale had died and the county did not know exactly what to do with it. “The blast blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds.”
Media and spectators gathered at the beach to watch a rather unique way of disposing of the dead whale carcass. Crews from the State Highway Division loaded it with 20 cases (1/2 ton) of dynamite and blew it up! In hopes to make it easier to be cleaned up by the birds and scavenger animals the attempt was unsuccessful, and just spread shrapnel of whale parts all over locals, cars, and onlookers. “Pieces of meat passed overhead while others were falling at our feet.” Everyone on the scene was covered in small particles of dead well and several cars were destroyed. The remaining part of the carcass was then buried.

Thelma (Geena Davis) and Louise (Susan Sarandon) cruise west in their 1966 Ford Thunderbird, singing along to the radio as Marianne Faithfull’s “The Ballad of Lucy Jordan” plays. The scene was filmed along Highway 6 & 50 near Thompson Springs, Utah. It takes place just before they encounter the unruly trucker who has repeatedly harassed them on the road. The two women eventually lure him to the side of the highway, where they confront him once and for all.
My parents were willing participants to recreate some scenes in this epic adventures movie.

My nephew Nick Latta makes a great James Bond and was also quite impressive when we went inside the opulent Casino de Monte-Carlo and we more than doubled our money.

GoldenEye (1995), Pierce Brosnan’s first film as James Bond. It takes place in Monte Carlo, Monaco, during the sequence where Bond is tracking the mysterious woman driving the red Ferrari, Xenia Onatopp.

In this shot, Bond has just arrived in his Aston Martin DB5, dressed in a tuxedo, and is speaking with the uniformed valet. The screenplay has the valet greet Bond in French, and Bond replies before noticing Xenia’s red Ferrari parked nearby. He then heads inside, where he encounters Xenia at a baccarat table and deliberately joins her game.
