Roy’s Motel & Café in Amboy, California is one of the most iconic stops on old Route 66. Opened in 1938 by Roy Crowl, it developed into a classic mid-century gas stop, café, and motel, later gaining its famous 1950s Googie-style neon sign. After I-40 bypassed the town in the 1970s, Amboy nearly emptied out, but Roy’s endured as a perfectly preserved slice of desert Americana. Its cinematic desert backdrop has made it a longtime filming favorite, appearing in The Hitcher (1986), Kalifornia (1993) starring Brad Pitt, Beneath the Dark (2010), Southbound (2015), and Road to Paloma with Jason Momoa. Music videos shot there include Enrique Iglesias’ “Hero,” Queens of the Stone Age’s “The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret,” Armin van Buuren’s “This Is What It Feels Like,” and LANY’s “Good Guys.” The site has also appeared in commercials, photography spreads, and a Maxim write-up in the March–April 2025 issue. Nearby, Daniel Tosh once revisited the area to give a comedic “redemption” to Mike Hughes, the flat-Earther daredevil known for his homemade steam-rocket launches. Roy’s remains one of the most photographed and mythic landmarks in the Mojave Desert.

It is always fun to get my parents involved with my little projects. Here is my dad as Iron Man releasing the Jericho from the Alabama Hills and Mt Whitney in the backgound.
The Jericho were repulsor missiles created by the Stark Industries to assist the United States Armed Forces in Afghanistan.

This is one of those times where the RetroSnap app has really come in handy to line things up perfectly.

Unmapped Ancient Pueblo ASU archaeological spot. This Pueblo is not found on any other Maps! This remote site is located in Black canyon City and can actually be seen off of the i-17 freeway.

We parked along the i-17 and bushwhacked up a treacherous climb to discover this rare archaeological site that is unmarked and unmapped. ASU discourages but doesn't prohibit the public to explore this site.

More info: The Black Mesa Ruins are part of the Agua Fria National Monument, situated approximately 40 miles north of Phoenix, along the eastern side of I-17. Established in 2000 by President Bill Clinton, the monument encompasses nearly 71,100 acres and features over 450 archaeological sites, predominantly found on Black Mesa and Perry Mesa.
The Hohokam "fortified hilltop" at Black Mesa, constructed between 800 and 1100 A.D., consists of 13 rooms, with the tallest walls reaching heights of about 12 to 14 feet. This region also contains hieroglyphs, although we were unable to locate them.

DIRECTIONS
From Phoenix, travel north on 1-17 roughly 45 miles. Drive past exit 244, and look for the "Avoid Overheating Turn Off AC" sign. This is where you'll want to park.

Human Skull Found Among Goodwill Donations in Goodyear: Police are investigating a shocking discovery made at a Goodwill store in Goodyear, where a suspected human skull was found in a box of donated items on September 5 2023.
Fortunately, the skull never made it onto the sales floor. "That's creepy. That's crazy. We come here all the time," remarked a local shopper, expressing the general disbelief surrounding the find. According to Goodwill officials and the Goodyear Police, after consulting with the Medical Examiner's Office, it appears that the skull is historic and holds no forensic significance, indicating that there is likely no associated crime. As the investigation continues, this jaw-dropping find has left the community both intrigued and unsettled.

Narrowest House in the World
The world's narrowest house is located in Amsterdam at Singel 7. Measuring just one meter wide, it's only slightly wider than its fror door, which means the residents must be quite slim! However, it's worth noting that the narrowness is limited to the front; the house expands to more conventional dimensions behind this facade.

Civil Rights Movement began in Albany GA 1961
The Albany Movement began here, at Shiloh Baptist Church, in November 1961.
A coalition of black improvement associations and student activists from SNCC and Albany State College, the protest group set an unprecedented goal: the desegregation of an entire community, from bus stations to lunch counters.
Demonstrations over two years resulted in the detention of 1,500 protesters. The participation and repeated arrests of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. brought national attention to the Albany Movement.
Music sustained the campaign in Southwest Georgia and gave birth to the SNCC Freedom Singers. Legal action and the increase in black voter registration led to school desegregation, the end of public employee discrimination, and the election of black political officials in the region, Lessons learned in Albany influenced events in Birmingham in
1963.
