August was the best search month we've tracked for one of our sign and wrap clients.

Clicks 139 to 161. Search appearances up 29%. Average position improved a point and a half.

The number that matters most: 19 of their 27 inquiries came from search. 13 from Google, 6 from AI assistants.

No new website. No ad budget. Just steady work on the pages their customers were already searching for.

Swipe through the numbers.

Ask your marketing company this one and pay attention to how fast they answer.

If we part ways next month, what do I keep?

One owner we talked with recently has left two agencies. Both times he walked away without his website. He owns his trucks. He owns his equipment. He earned every one of his reviews himself. But the thing that shows up when a customer searches his name belonged to somebody else, twice, and he had to start over from nothing both times.

Here is the list worth protecting. Your domain. Your website and everything on it. Your ad accounts and your business profiles. Your reviews and your customer data.

None of that should be a bargaining chip. An agency that is confident in its work does not need to hold your assets to keep you around.

Ours is written down. You own all of it, and you are month to month.

Your Google report says 19,000 impressions. Do you know what that number actually means?

It's how many times your business showed up in a search result. Not clicks. Not customers. Just how often you were in the room.

Nobody hires a business they never saw.

Three of our clients, May to August:

Client 1: 770 → 1,787

Client 2: 14,896 → 31,846

Client 3: 19,015 → 37,525

Send us your website. We'll show you every search term you're already ranking for, where you sit, and who's beating you.

A heating and plumbing company owner said something on a call this month that we hear in one form or another almost every week.

"Our online presence doesn't match how capable and strong our company is."

Thirty-five years in business. Award winning work. The kind of reputation you only build by doing right by people for a long time. Then we pulled their site data. About 400 pages, and fewer than 10 of them show up for anything.

That gap is rarely a reflection of the work. It usually traces back to four things. The site was built for an older version of search. Pages piled up over the years without a structure, so nothing became the definitive answer to anything. Three separate vendors each report on their own slice. And nobody can trace a phone call back to what caused it.

Here is how we work on it. Diagnose before building, starting with the site, the Google profile, and the search data. Rebuild the foundation so every page earns its place in search and in AI answers. Get every call, form, and chat landing in one place with follow up attached so nothing sits overnight. Then report in plain English on calls, booked jobs, and where they came from.

What that can look like: a dryer vent and duct cleaning company with 30 years on the North Shore came to us with a strong reputation and almost no online visibility. Over six months their monthly search impressions went from 1,814 to 22,911, incoming calls climbed about 85 percent, and their main service term settled at number two on Google. The full case study is on our site under Results.

Results depend on your market and how much ground there is to make up. But if your company is better than your search results make it look, that gap is fixable, and it is worth knowing what it is costing you.

If you're a year or two in, do these five things before you spend a dollar on marketing.

Claim your Google profile. Build a site that answers the questions people actually ask you on the phone. Get your first ten reviews. Track where every call comes from. Then run ads.

The order matters more than the budget. Ads amplify a system that works. They don't replace one.

Swipe for the whole thing.

"We rank on Google, so we're covered."

Not anymore. Every AI assistant reads a different library of the web:

ChatGPT reads Bing Gemini reads Google Claude reads Brave Perplexity blends both

So you can be all over Google and completely missing from ChatGPT. Two different doors, and most businesses have only opened one.

Swipe for the two other things that catch people off guard, including why your homepage might be all the AI ever sees.

Most websites don't fail. They just stop.

Built three years ago, looked great, never touched since. Meanwhile every competitor added pages, answered questions, published something.

Google crawls sites that change and gradually loses interest in sites that don't. You don't get a warning. You just slide down the page.

A few new pages a month is usually all it takes. Service pages, town pages, real answers to the questions customers ask you on the phone.

When did you last add anything to yours?

Every contractor has the same photo. The finished kitchen, shot wide, perfect light.

It's a nice picture. It also looks exactly like every other finished kitchen on the internet, which means it does almost nothing to convince somebody to call you instead of the next guy.

The photos that actually move people are the ones most owners never take. Your tech on his knees with drop cloths down. The vent before and after. The part of the job where you did it right and nobody was watching.

That's what a homeowner is nervous about. Not whether it'll look good when it's done. Whether you'll show up, work clean, and not wreck their floors.

Three photos a job. Before, during, done. Same three shots go on your website gallery, into a Google Business Profile post, and out on social. Google rewards a profile that posts real photos, and so do the people reading it.

Do that for a month and you'll never wonder what to post again.

Five things you can do this month so AI can actually find your business. None of them need a developer.

Same name, address and phone everywhere. Even "St." versus "Street" counts.
Make your headings the questions customers ask, with the answer right underneath.
Get mentioned somewhere that isn't your own website.
Ask for reviews that name the job and the town.
Publish how you're different before AI guesses. It guesses wrong.

Swipe for the why behind each one, and save this for when you sit down to do it.

Most contractors start marketing the week the phone goes quiet.

That's January. Or February. Whenever the calls dry up and there's suddenly time to think about it.

Problem is, local search doesn't work on that timeline. A new page shows up in Google within days, then sits on page three for a month or two before it climbs. We've watched town pages take four months to reach page one and then stay there for years.

So the work you do in August is what fills January. Not the work you start in January.

If you're busy right now, that's the window. It's the only time of year you can afford to build something that pays off later, because you're not desperate for it to pay off today.

The guy who's outranking you next winter is doing it right now while he's slammed.
