Some places are meant to feel safe.

But history has a way of exposing what happens when that trust is broken.

This June at the Science Café by Women, Life and Science, we invite you into a conversation that is unsettling - but necessary. Women, Life & Science

We are honored to welcome author Susanne Paola Antonetta, as we confront the hidden history of eugenics and the haunting legacy of psychiatric institutions during N**i Germany’s Aktion T4 program, when systems designed for healing were turned into systems of control and death. And the disturbing question is not only what happened then…but what echoes still remain today.

Where does science end and where does harm begin?

And how close are we, now, to repeating what we believe we’ve left behind?

Join us for an evening of difficult truths, powerful reflection, and questions that won’t let go easily.

📅 Date: Monday, June 29th, 2026 / 5pm

How much of mental health diagnosis is science, and how much is shaped by fear, culture, and systems of power?

How differently can depression shape a person’s reality?

And how dangerous does medicine become when society starts defining which lives are worth saving?

Some of the darkest chapters in modern medicine didn’t begin with monsters.
They began with educated people. Doctors. Researchers. Institutions.
People - convinced they were improving humanity.
Before World War II, Germany’s eugenics movement labeled mental illness, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and even “difference” itself as threats to the purity of future generations. Patients were institutionalized, sterilized, neglected, and murdered — often under the belief that science justified it.
But what happens when the system decides a human being is hopeless?

In The Devil’s Castle, author Susanne Antonetta explores the haunting history of eugenics alongside deeply personal experiences with psychiatric diagnosis and care.

Do you think this ended with World War II? Or do we still decide, in quieter ways, which minds are “normal,” which lives have value, and who is considered beyond hope?
One doctor declared someone schizophrenic — hopeless, beyond recovery.
Later, another diagnosis changed everything: bipolar disorder. Suddenly, there was “hope.”

Yet nothing in the mind or life had actually changed. Only a word had.

Join us for a powerful discussion with the author behind The Devil’s Castle.
Registration is free, but space is limited.

What an incredible day at Women, Life and Science!

This year’s theme, The Science of Self, sparked powerful conversations around growth, vulnerability, leadership, women’s health, and the courage to ask uncomfortable questions.

One thing became clear: leadership is personal. The strongest impact comes from people willing to grow, reflect, and create change with intention.

Grateful for every speaker, organizer, sponsor, and attendee who made this space so inspiring. Women, Life & Science
