July's Science Café with author Susanne Antonetta was an incredibly eye-opening-and sobering-experience. Women, Life & Science

We delved into the dark history of Germany's eugenics movement, exploring how conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and even general "difference" were weaponized and labeled as threats to future generations. Under the terrifying guise of "justifying science," patients were institutionalized, sterilized, and murdered in the name of purity. There were trials, yet the doctors responsible for thousands of deaths were ultimately justified.

The conversation struck an even deeper chord as we connected those historical mindsets to modern pharmacology. It's alarming to see how profit-driven systems can echo past vulnerabilities-rushing new drugs to market without long-term studies and prescribing them rapidly without truly understanding the individual patient. Too often, people aren't told how these substances alter the mind or how grueling the process of coming off them can be.

The human brain and human mentality are an incredibly intricate, largely unmapped terrain-like a vast, mysterious trench. Reality varies beautifully and completely for each person. True care requires patience, deep understanding, and humility in the face of what we still don't know, rather than quick fixes that disregard the complexity of the mind.

How much of mental health diagnosis is science, and how much is shaped by fear, culture, and systems of power?

Some of the darkest chapters in modern medicine didn’t begin with monsters.
They began with educated people. Doctors. Researchers. Institutions.
People - convinced they were improving humanity.
Before World War II, Germany’s eugenics movement labeled mental illness, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and even “difference” itself as threats to the purity of future generations. Patients were institutionalized, sterilized, neglected, and murdered — often under the belief that science justified it.
But what happens when the system decides a human being is hopeless?
