Heads up for Saturday March 14th.

Dear KCEC Members,

A Fire Weather Watch is in effect Saturday from 12 PM to 10 PM across Kit Carson Electric Cooperative’s entire service territory. Forecasts call for strong winds and critical fire weather conditions, increasing wildfire risk across northern New Mexico this weekend.

To help protect our communities, non-reclose safety settings will be placed in several areas. These settings prevent power lines from automatically re-energizing if they are struck by debris or vegetation during high-risk weather. While this helps reduce wildfire ignition risk, temporary outages may occur if a line is impacted.

Areas expected to be placed on non-reclose include:

• Ute Park
• Black Lake to Hidden Lake and Black Lake Resorts
• El Valle
• Ojo Sarco
• Rockwall to Mora County Line (including Tres Ritos, Sipapu, and Loma Linda)
• Cabresto
• Vallecitos, Petaca, and Servilleta
• Upper Red River area
• Taos Canyon
• Idlewild
• Lake View Pines
• Eagle Nest to Elizabethtown

We encourage members in these areas to prepare for the possibility of temporary outages by charging phones and essential devices and staying informed through KCEC updates and local weather alerts.

Our operations teams will continue monitoring weather conditions closely throughout the weekend and will provide updates if conditions change.

Thank you for helping us keep our communities safe.

Kit Carson Electric Cooperative – Member Advisory
Fire Weather Watch for Thursday, March 5

The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Thursday, March 5 from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM across northern New Mexico and surrounding areas served by Kit Carson Electric Cooperative.

Forecast conditions include strong southwest winds of 15–35 mph with gusts up to 45–55 mph and extremely low humidity between 6–10%. These conditions create elevated to extreme wildfire danger, meaning any fire that starts could spread rapidly and become difficult to control.

Kit Carson Electric urges members to avoid outdoor burning and activities that could spark a fire, such as welding, grinding, or operating equipment that may create sparks. Please remain alert and report any signs of wildfire immediately to local authorities.

Our crews will be closely monitoring conditions to maintain the reliability and safety of the electric system.

For updates, follow Kit Carson Electric Cooperative and monitor local weather alerts.

Kit Carson Electric Cooperative uses Firescape, an advanced wildfire risk monitoring system, to help protect our communities, infrastructure, and natural landscapes.

Firescape combines real-time weather data, fire behavior modeling, and local sensor networks to monitor conditions that could lead to wildfires. The system analyzes factors such as wind speed, humidity, temperature, and fuel conditions to identify when wildfire risk becomes elevated or critical.

When dangerous conditions develop, Firescape automatically sends alerts to KCEC to increase situational awareness, monitor the electrical system more closely, and take preventive actions if necessary. This proactive approach helps reduce wildfire risk and improve the safety and reliability of electric service.

By implementing Firescape, Kit Carson Electric Cooperative is strengthening its wildfire mitigation strategy and improving early detection and response during high-risk weather events.
