WOLVERINES
Michigan defense clamps down in scrappy win over Washington
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan football needed a bounce-back performance from its defense, and it got one on Saturday.
Behind a series of turnovers and stout defensive front, the Wolverines followed up their dismal effort last weekend with a scrappy 24-7 victory over Washington at Michigan Stadium.
UW, who entered the game with a top-20 offense nationally, was held to just 249 yards and a touchdown. Its dual-threat quarterback, Demond Williams Jr., was held to 209 yards throwing, negative-19 yards rushing and three interceptions. Williams had one interception in six games entering Saturday.
An interception by safety Cole Sullivan late in the third quarter proved to be the difference, setting Michigan up inside the UW red zone for a 14-yard touchdown run by Jordan Marshall.
Marshall, who handled a bulk of the carries for starter Justice Haynes, scratched with an abdominal injury, finished with 25 carries for a career-high 133 yards.
Michigan (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) tacked on a third score early in the fourth quarter, after Jimmy Rolder picked off a Williams pass and the Wolverines engineered a nine-play, 62-yard touchdown drive.
Before that scoring flurry, U-M had trouble stringing together productive drives earlier in the game. The unit went three-and-out to open the game, then turned the football over on downs. It wasn’t until the end of the first quarter that Michigan got on the scoreboard first, after quarterback Bryce Underwood connected with freshman Andrew Marsh for a 22-yard touchdown.
A missed field goal from Dominic Zvada and turnover on downs to open the second half kept the game tied, 7-7. It wasn’t until Michigan turned up the heat in the second half that the Wolverines were able to pull away. Washington entered Saturday’s game outscoring opponents 80-10 in the fourth quarter; it was outscored, 10-0, on Saturday.
