Michigan defense clamps down in scrappy win over Washington

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan football needed a bounce-back performance from its defense, and it got one on Saturday.

Behind a series of turnovers and stout defensive front, the Wolverines followed up their dismal effort last weekend with a scrappy 24-7 victory over Washington at Michigan Stadium.

UW, who entered the game with a top-20 offense nationally, was held to just 249 yards and a touchdown. Its dual-threat quarterback, Demond Williams Jr., was held to 209 yards throwing, negative-19 yards rushing and three interceptions. Williams had one interception in six games entering Saturday.

An interception by safety Cole Sullivan late in the third quarter proved to be the difference, setting Michigan up inside the UW red zone for a 14-yard touchdown run by Jordan Marshall.

Marshall, who handled a bulk of the carries for starter Justice Haynes, scratched with an abdominal injury, finished with 25 carries for a career-high 133 yards.

Michigan (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) tacked on a third score early in the fourth quarter, after Jimmy Rolder picked off a Williams pass and the Wolverines engineered a nine-play, 62-yard touchdown drive.

Before that scoring flurry, U-M had trouble stringing together productive drives earlier in the game. The unit went three-and-out to open the game, then turned the football over on downs. It wasn’t until the end of the first quarter that Michigan got on the scoreboard first, after quarterback Bryce Underwood connected with freshman Andrew Marsh for a 22-yard touchdown.

A missed field goal from Dominic Zvada and turnover on downs to open the second half kept the game tied, 7-7. It wasn’t until Michigan turned up the heat in the second half that the Wolverines were able to pull away. Washington entered Saturday’s game outscoring opponents 80-10 in the fourth quarter; it was outscored, 10-0, on Saturday.

Vigil held following deadly Grand Blanc Township church attack

BURTON, MI – A crowd of more than 100 people gathered in the football field outside of a church in Burton for a vigil tonight following a shooting at a Grand Blanc Township church.

“I pray for a blessing on our community and the horrific shadow of today’s tragedy,” Michigan State Rep. Dave Martin said.

The vigil was held by the Genesee County Republican Party on Sunday, Sept. 28, at Holy Redeemer Church, located at 1227 E. Bristol Road.

“I dedicate and start my Sunday mornings, praying for Jesus and football,” Jody Cramer said. “ It wasn’t until I learned of the tragedies that occurred this afternoon that I realized the gravity and magnitude of the prayer that I was dedicated to. I’m praying for the police and the first responders.”

The shooting occurred at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, located at 4285 McCandlish Road. As of Sunday night, four people have died as a result of the incident, and several others are injured.

During the incident, the suspected shooter, Thomas Jacob Sanford, drove his vehicle into the church and set the building ablaze. Sanford was killed by authorities during the incident.

Burton residents also saw a heavy police presence as law enforcement searched Sanford’s home.

The vigil was scheduled to take place prior to the shooting as it was initially intended to serve as a vigil for conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed on Sept. 10.

However, several of those who spoke during the event also commented on the Grand Blanc Township shooting.

“Whether they be like Charlie Kirk, who fearlessly proclaimed you around the world, the school of who are praying at mass in Minnesota, or the families and members of the Grand Blanc stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, bless our land that we may all be able to worship as we understand you in peace,” Anne DeLisle said.

In addition to hearing from speakers, vigil attendees prayed, lit candles, and listened to Christian music.

“It’s not too late to anyone who’s caught in hatred’s grip,” Pastor Christopher Thoma said. “You can turn. You can change.”

CHILD ABUSE
VIGIL HELD FOR 5-YEAR-OLD GIRL ALLEGEDLY BEATEN TO DEATH BY GRANDFATHER, WIFE IN PARK FOREST
Klent Elwoods, Lisa Jones charged with first degree murder

PARK FOREST, Ill. (WLS) -- Loved ones, neighbors and members of the Park Forest Police Department gathered Thursday to remember 5-year-old Jada Moore, whose grandfather and his wife are charged with her death.

Police said Klent Elwoods, 62, and his wife, Lisa Jones, 57, both admitted to abusing their granddaughter, who had been temporarily placed in their custody.

Paramedics found Moore unresponsive, lying naked on a couch in the living room last Friday at a Park Forest home after Elwoods called 911.

Prosecutors said Elwoods told the dispatcher, "I was beating my granddaughter and now she is out of it." Moore was airlifted to Comer Children's Hospital and died the next day from a brain injury.

"This is a lot to deal with. Nobody is every prepared, especially to lose their child in that particular way," said her mother Kimberly Elwoods. "Like, I can't believe it."

Both Elwoods and Jones have been charged with first-degree murder, and face a life sentence if convicted.

The couple, investigators said, had taken custody of the girl on April 5, to give her mother, who lives in Georgia, time to improve her living situation there.

Prosecutors said a post-arrest confession provided by Jones indicates the beatings started about a month later, apparently provoked by several instances of the girl soiling herself. Each one was documented on a calendar found inside the home.

"What did she do? What did she do that was that bad? That's my question to him," said Terrance White, great uncle.

Kimberly Elwoods said she has no words for her father.

"I thought that man was a stand-up guy. And he's really a monster," she said. "I absolutely loved my daughter. I adored her. And I want her to know even up there she is well-loved."

Kimberly said Jada turned five in April, loved all things Barbie, and loved making people laugh. She said she's still working to raise money for a funeral. She says she had planned to pick up Jada next month to bring her back to Georgia.

Elwoods and Jones were denied bond and are due back in court on August 2.

BREAKING NEWS
14 young people shot in Georgia in 12 hours | Faith leaders call for solutions to gun violence

ATLANTA — In the wake of the tragic death of 16-year-old Lloyd Foster III, faith leaders from across the metro gathered at Rodney Cook Park in Historic Vine City to pray for peace and demand solutions.
The teen was killed in a double shooting on Feb. 1 at 371 Sunset Ave., and since then, at least six other children have been injured by guns in the Atlanta metro area.

In just a matter of 12 hours in the past day, 14 young people have been shot in the state of Georgia.
During the gathering, Oshebar Hardman with AND Campaign called for the community to come together and stand against violence in the streets.
"Let us, as a community, come together. This stands as men and women that are now saying no more, no more violence in the street," Hardman said.
The group then marched to the church where Lloyd Foster III's funeral was taking place. Lloyd's father spoke out about his hopes for solutions so that no other family has to suffer.
"They have their own culture -- that we have no idea what's going on here," he said.
However, the clergy members who gathered at the park hope to change that by implementing programs that will get to the root of the problem.
Maria Stafford, an organizer for We Care, hopes that holding events with resources like therapy and economic counseling will help combat youth gun violence.
"When you send your son out there into a war zone or your daughter in a war zone, you need therapy to be able to deal with these things," Stafford said.
Stafford also emphasized the importance of going door-to-door and getting back into grassroots efforts.
"It's going to take us to actually going door to door, getting back into some grassroots, going in those homes, letting them know that we're just not going to politicize this," she said.
Overall, the gathering was a desperate cry for an end to the community's pandemic of violence.
"Not another one of our brothers or young people said, 'Go down' while we are present," Darrell Elligan said.
The small steps taken by the clergy members are part of a larger effort to combat youth gun violence and create a safer community for all.

Breaking News:
MONTGOMERY COUNTY MOM ACCUSED OF ABANDONING 2 YOUNG CHILDREN HOME ALONE FOR NEARLY 2 MONTHS

ROMAN FOREST, Texas (KTRK) -- A mother is wanted by Roman Forest police, accused of abandoning her two young children and leaving them alone, in deplorable conditions with very little food, for nearly two months.

According to the Roman Forest police chief, Raven Yates, 31, left her 12-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son alone at their home in the 2000 block of Maplewood Ridge Drive. Yates reportedly left in late September, and it was not until nearly two months later that the children were discovered alone.

"No food in the house; everything was empty," Chief Stephen Carlisle said. "There were some dry beans and spices. That was it."

While the refrigerator and cabinets were nearly empty, the 3-year-old's bedroom smelled like heavy urine, according to investigators.

"A 12-year-old cannot take care of a 3-year-old for a long period of time, especially over a month and a half," Carlisle said. "It's dangerous and irresponsible of a parent. Without medical supplies or ways to get food, that's very dangerous."

The children have different fathers and, according to investigators, Yates threatened her 12-year-old daughter that the girl's father would take her and leave her 3-year-old brother alone if she told anyone.

Fearful of what may happen, the 12-year-old would get food by telling her father that Yates was working, and he would order food sent to the house. It was not until family members spotted Yates in Mobile, Alabama, where she is from, that they contacted the child's father because the kids were not with her.

According to the chief, the father of the 12-year-old, a music producer in California, flew to Texas and called the police once he found out. The chief also added that the family moved to Texas about a year ago, and that the children were never enrolled in school.

Yates has been charged with two counts of abandoning or endangering a child without intent to return. The Roman Forest Police Department is working with Mobile police in Alabama to find and arrest Yates. A warrant for her arrest was filed in December. She has been actively posting on her social media accounts with thousands of followers as investigators work to make an arrest.

Yates also has a 14-year-old daughter who was reported as a runaway before the mother was accused of leaving her younger children. According to police, all three children have been reunited and are safe with a family member.

15-year-old shot, killed at teen hotel party in Detroit, police say
DPD searching for suspects who left on foot

DETROIT – Detroit Police say a 15-year-old boy was shot and killed early Saturday morning during a party at Hawthorne Suites off the Southfield Freeway near the Dearborn and Detroit border.

Investigators are still sorting through information and video but say this started with an exchange over social media. Around 3:25 a.m. Saturday, suspect(s) arrived at the party of 20 to 30 teenagers, according to police.
“Three suspects arrived on foot and the victim came to the doorway, and shots were fired from not only from the ground but also from the apartment at each other. And the victim was hit in the chest and came back inside the apartment where he passed away,” said Detroit Police 6th Precinct Captain Michael Dicicco.
Officials say that the party was in an upper suite.
Parents of the teens are on the scene and are cooperating.
“It was pretty wild and chaotic at first. People’s cooler heads have prevailed. They’ve calmed down now, and they’re being cooperative. Some of the parents took their kids and left right away. Some went to the 6th precinct and gave statements which were appreciated because that’s where we got a lot of our good information,” said Dicicco.

Police are still searching for the suspect(s). If you have any information, you’re asked to call Detroit Police Department.
This is a developing story, and information will be updated when it becomes available.

Family searching for answers after father was shot at work on Detroit’s west side
Police are still searching for the gunman

DETROIT – A family is searching for the person who shot their beloved father and grandfather because they say he has taken a turn for the worse.
Tony Lee was working at the Sweet Soul Bistro on Detroit’s west side when he jumped in to break up a fight and got shot.

“My sister at one time was preparing for a possible funeral,” said Roxanne.
Lee is still fighting to survive but remains in the hospital on a ventilator.
“It doesn’t look good, and he’s been struggling for quite a while,” Roxanne said.
On Nov. 6, Lee was working when several customers got into a fight. He tried protecting a woman and was shot five times.
“(He) always tried to help people, anybody in need, he always tried to help them out, so that’s why it’s so sad because he didn’t want the girl to be abused,” Roxanne said.
Although there were witnesses, the gunman has not been arrested.

“This person who shot him is still at large, and his family is suffering,” Roxanne said. “They are just devastated. We really love Tony, and his family needs support right now.”
While hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds, Lee suffered a heart attack, and his condition deteriorated.
“He has a lot of children, and they are all there at the hospital as often as they can to support their father,” Roxanne said.
As the family hopes for news of an arrest, Lee’s medical bills are piling up.
“This is an innocent man here suffering in the hospital and his family (is) in turmoil, and something needs to be done,” Roxanne said.
A second man was shot in the senseless shooting at the restaurant, and police are still looking for the gunman.
