Our scanning technology uses structured light to capture depth data. A laser projector casts a pattern of thousands of infrared dots onto the subject; an infra
red camera records how the pattern of dots changes, thereby understanding the subject's 3D geometry. At the same time, a high resolution digital camera captures the subject's color data. Our primary material for 3D portraits is a full color stone material. These are created using a 3D printing method known as Binder Jetting. In this process, ink and a binder (glue) are selectively deposited on a bed of gypsum powder to build the print layer by layer. After printing the parts are carefully removed from the powder bed and cleaned of excess powder. They are then submerged in a cyanoacrylate (superglue) bath to further solidify them and help bring out the colors. The final print is hard and brittle with a rough, grainy texture. The ink is deposited using technology similar to 2D inkjet printers and can print in 390,000 different colors.
