Yesterday we wrapped up the installation of several new signs for First Baptist Church of Black Mountain, and this was a fun one!

At one time, a main sign stood inside the existing U-shaped brick structure. The sign was long gone, but what remained were two sets of very rusty threaded rods protruding from the brick pillars -complete with equally rusty nuts.

Rather than immediately deciding the old hardware had to come out, we broke out the **Kroil** (even better than PB Blaster for persuading rusty hardware to cooperate) and let it work its magic for 48 hours.

Success! Once we knew the existing hardware could be salvaged, we built a pressure-treated 2x4 framework that bolted directly onto the original threaded rods - and we even reused the original nuts. No unnecessary demolition, no drilling into those beautiful brick columns, and the new sign fit right into the existing structure.

The finished result is stunning.

We also installed five new building signs to help visitors find their way around the church campus. Our new hammer drill made short work of fastening those signs into the mortar with Tapcons. (We do love it when buying a new tool can be classified as a legitimate business expense. 😁)

The new signage really dresses up the property and gives the entire campus a fresh, welcoming look—one that reflects a thriving, active church that takes pride in its community.

Thank you to First Baptist Church of Black Mountain for trusting Asheville Signworks with the project. We think it turned out beautifully!

Some sign and graphics projects are straightforward. Others turn into detective work.

This custom canopy for Black Mountain CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) definitely fell into the second category.

The organization had been gifted a Vitabri 10' × 10' canopy frame, but the original canopy had the previous owners graphics and needed to be replaced. Sounds simple enough, right? Not quite.

Our first call to the manufacturer left us scratching our heads. We were told we needed to identify the exact model before they could provide a new (unprinted) canopy for our frame. There was just one problem: the model wasn't listed anywhere on the frame or the old canopy. Since the canopy had been donated, there was no owner's manual either (because, honestly... who keeps the owner's manual for a canopy?). So the hunt began.

After a lot of research, phone calls, and digging through every clue we could find, we finally discovered something surprising: Vitabri only makes one 10' × 10' canopy model. It was one of those moments where you can't help but wonder why that wasn't the first thing we were told.

Rather than giving up or sending our customer elsewhere, we kept looking for a solution. Eventually, we found another supplier who could manufacture a brand-new replacement canopy that fit the frame perfectly.

The finished canopy features Black Mountain CERT printed in eight different locations, making the organization highly visible from every direction during community events and emergency response activities. The material is exceptionally durable and highly water-resistant—just what a volunteer emergency response team needs.

Most people looking at the finished product will simply see a beautiful custom canopy.

What they won't see are the hours spent researching, making phone calls, tracking down information, and solving a problem that didn't have an obvious answer. That's okay.

At Asheville Signworks, we genuinely enjoy solving puzzles like this. Every unusual project teaches us something new, and helping customers overcome challenges is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

Sometimes our job isn't just making signs and graphics. Sometimes it's figuring out what everyone else says can't be figured out. And that's exactly the kind of challenge we enjoy.

We recently installed this pair of freestanding entrance signs at The Timbers in Hillsborough, NC!

Each sign measures 5' x 3' and is mounted on a pair of powder-coated blue aluminum posts. The posts are set 3 feet into concrete, so these signs are built to stay put. It would take hurricane-force winds to move them—and with any luck, we won't see another Helene in our lifetimes.

The graphics are made from 1/4" powder-coated dimensional aluminum, mechanically fastened from the back for a clean, durable installation. To keep the hardware completely hidden, we finished the backs with custom contour-cut panels that match the shape of the front, giving both sides a clean, finished appearance.

We're proud of how these turned out. If you're looking for durable, professional entrance signage for your neighborhood, business, or development, we'd love to help!

Go Wildcats!

We recently wrapped up the design, production, and installation of this impressive 24-foot banner at Carolina Day School’s gymnasium. Every large-format project brings its own set of challenges, and we love putting our years of experience and problem-solving skills to work to make sure everything comes together just right.

It’s always rewarding to see a project transform a space. Thanks, Carolina Day School, for trusting Asheville Sign Works to help showcase your Wildcat pride!

A little fender-bender couldn’t keep this sign down for long!

We recently replaced the damaged face on the entrance sign for Jeremiah’s Italian Ice on Merrimon Avenue after an unfortunate encounter with a vehicle. The old face was beyond repair, so we fabricated a brand-new plexiglass insert, applied fresh vinyl graphics, and brought it back to life.

Now the sign looks as good as new and is ready to welcome customers once again!

As a bonus, our shop dog Anoob was rewarded with a cup of Jeremiah’s Italian Ice for being such a good boy during the job. We’d say that’s a pretty sweet payday.

Thanks to Jeremiah’s for the treat and for trusting Asheville Sign Works with the repair!

Here are some truly fabulous MacGyvering ideas! In the business of signmaking it is greatly helpful to be able to solve problems on the fly; to be able to make or repair something using whatever simple items or conveniently on-hand materials are available. Did you know that the term "MacGuyver" is inspired by the iconic 1980s television character Angus MacGyver, who was famous for improvising solutions with a Swiss Army knife and duct tape. He's the reason we love duct tape!

We just finished this hand-painted mural for Biltmore Iron and Metal Company, affectionately known as BIMCO. A scroungers paradise, its chock full of treasures. BIMCO presents an opportunity for recycling at its finest: a few years back, we created a sign made entirely of spare parts from BIMCO for Asheville‘s own STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) school.
