You don’t have to be obsessed. But you do have to be familiar. 
Know the format. 
Know the kinds of guests they book. 
Know whether the host interrupts or lets people talk.

Your audience already agrees with you. And that’s the problem.

We’ve had clients turn down major national TV appearances because they didn’t feel politically aligned with that network’s audience.

We understand the instinct. And we pushed back anyway.

Here’s why:
Preaching to the converted feels good but it doesn’t build authority 🫣

The experts who become truly credible voices are the ones who’ve been pressure-tested. Who’ve had their thinking challenged by a skeptical host, a different demographic, an audience that came in with different assumptions.

There’s also a reach argument that’s hard to ignore.

Every network has millions of viewers. Those viewers include people in your potential audience — readers, clients, patients, students — who typically get their news from a different source than you do.

Declining the appearance doesn’t protect your brand. It just means those people never hear from you.

We’re not in the business of telling clients what to believe.

But we are in the business of helping them be heard — widely, credibly, and by people who need what they know.

Unpopular opinion:

Most experts aren’t media-ready.

And that’s completely okay.

Being brilliant at what you do and being able to explain what you do on camera, in 90 seconds, live, in a way that makes a Tuesday-morning viewer feel something...

They’re entirely different skills.

One you spent years building. But the other is something most people have never been taught.

So if you’ve ever thought: “I should be on TV” — and then immediately thought — “but I probably couldn’t pull it off”...you were probably right about the first part. The second part is just a skill gap. 

We work with experts and authors every day who felt exactly the same way. People with genuinely important things to say who just needed someone to help them find the angle, sharpen the hook, and get in front of the right producer.

That’s the whole job.
