Lawyers want to practice law. It is why they spent so much time in school, and why they choose the specific verticals they do - it is what they are passionate about! The last thing most attorneys want is to have to manage marketing for new clients. Lawyers, as with most professionals, want and need to focus on their core interests.

While we focus on many areas of law, one of our favorite specialties is personal injury - specifically motor vehicle accidents. It is an evergreen vertical that isn’t subjected to the typical seasonality of business. ✨ Meet Madeline Phillips, our Client Relationship Manager!✨

🎇 What’s the most exciting part of your current job role?
The most exciting part of my role as a Client Relationship Manager is being able to speak with our amazing clients and publishers every day! It is empowering to achieve goals and hit targets that mutually benefit each involved party. I love being in a people-centric role while still being able to manage accounts and find out where we can better optimize through data! Also, not to mention I lucked out with the most supportive and hard-working team!!

🖥 How do you usually start the day?
Each morning, I love to kick start my day by doing something to get my brain and body moving! Whether that's a workout class, walk, practicing Spanish or completing the Wordle of the day! I also love reading Morning Brew, an easily-digestible newsletter outlining important things going on around the world. I love having a routine before heading into the office. It helps me show up for myself and my team throughout the rest of the day!

🗺 Have you ever lived outside of the US?
Yes! Upon completing my education at Cal Poly, I relocated to the vibrant city of Barcelona, Spain for an immersive year and a half. This period was dedicated to the pursuit of my Master's in Human Resources and Talent Development. I had studied abroad there during my time in undergrad and fell in love with the city. I decided to return, sticking around a bit longer than planned to gather work experience in the translation industry while making some lifelong friends along the way. Now I am located in Chicago, which has that same fast-paced, energetic vibe I enjoy, plus some surprisingly great spots for tapas! ¡Salud!

😁 What attribute of your personality lends to your success in your career?
I like to believe it is my positivity! I am always smiling and trying to build each member of the team up. People perform better when they are happy and when they enjoy coming to work. If you think it is going to be a bad day at work - it is going to be a bad day at work. I like making sure that I remain optimistic, because at the end of the day, everything is "figureoutable". I know that my team has my back, the same way that I have theirs and someone will come up with a solution to any problem we may have to face.

☕ What would your ideal day at work look like?
I like being busy, but I also love getting to see and talk to everyone! I enjoy a mix of meetings, but also having the time to get things done. I am also lucky that the entire team respects a work/life balance - and when my to-do list is done for the day I can feel good about curling up on the couch to watch Big Brother with my partner and two cats, Gabby and Lyssa!

🌲 Where do you feel most relaxed?
Anywhere in nature. Living in New Jersey, I am actually really lucky - people don't realize how many different landscapes we have - oceans, woods, lakes, farms, swamps. The one thing we are missing are mountains, but that doesn't mean we don't still have great hiking! When you spend so much time looking at a screen, it is so important to unplug and take a breath. I think nature also helps me remain positive - when you spend time out in the world, you realize how big and beautiful it is, and how small you (and your personal world) are, comparatively. It helps keep things in perspective, and it is easier to see that things aren't so bad.

✅ What’s something you find challenging about your work?
One of the things I love about my job, and this industry, is that things are constantly changing. You really have to be on your toes and ready to pivot at a moments notice. I have to make sure I'm paying attention to every detail and noticing trends or how to better a campaign quickly. It can definitely be a challenging, but it's so rewarding when I am able to make a quick change to optimize performance.

💻 What is your favorite part about a flexible workplace?
My partner and I recently moved from Santa Barbara, CA to Santa Fe, NM and knowing we could make such a big life change while keeping my job was wonderful! This team in particular was so supportive and excited for me. I think it is so important to acknowledge that people are more than their work, and have other important things going on. This team is phenomenal in caring about each other as a whole person, and celebrating wins both professionally and personal!

🐕 Do you have any pets?
Yes! My partner and I have a dog named T**a! She is almost 8, and when asked what kind of dog she is, we like to say "the 80 lbs kind". We are definitely the obsessed dog parents, she is our whole world. One of the factors in moving to Santa Fe was that we could afford a place with a yard for her. She loves going on adventures, whether that be finding a park to play fetch or going on a hike and finding her some water to play in!

📊What motivates you at work?
Definitely my team members. I really enjoy building cool things with people I love and it motivates me to see my teammates working towards a common goal. To me, a great team is the most important factor to a successful company. You can always teach a skill, but finding an effective team that has fun working together is extremely difficult and simply unteachable. Another bonus in having an impressive team is that I get to continuously learn from each and every person.

💡What’s one skill that you’ve improved in the last year? How did you do it?
I think the skill that has helped me the most in the last year is identifying opportunities through strong relationships. To put it simply, if you work with people you like, have fun with, and trust, the success should follow naturally. Every relationship does not have to be immediately fruitful and it will always pay off in the end if you help someone even with no immediate benefit for yourself. This is definitely something I've learned working with my coworkers over the last year, people and relationships should be the #1 priority.

🏅When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
This one probably changed every week, from the classics to some that are far out. President, Astronaut, Pro Soccer Player, rock climber, engineer, translator, chef, entrepreneur (check!), billionaire (give me a couple more years) and I think at one point I wanted to be a vampire. My sister actually convinced me that she was a vampire and I wanted to fit in....

🏢 What’s the best piece of professional advice you’ve ever received?
Early in my career, someone shared a piece of advice that has stuck with me: "Always focus on controlling the controllables." It's insane how much stress can be eased by directing your energy toward crafting contingency plans for what you can manage, rather than getting caught up in what you can't. This is especially true when working with new people; there's a lot that's beyond our control, but being prepared is something we can control. This advice has taught me to invest my time in areas I can influence, rather than those I can't.

🌏 If you could change something in the world, what would it be?
This is a super cheesy answer but I'd eliminate inequality in all its forms. Being born and raised in Thailand, then moving to the US later in life really highlighted just how much inequality exists. Whether it's economic, social, or educational disparities, it's insane how much being born in the right place or to the right family can change the way your entire life looks. Imagine how different the world would be if everyone was set up for success, and not just the lucky few.

👯‍♀️ Where are you in birth order (oldest? middle? youngest?) and do you think it affects your personality?
I'm the older twin; I have a twin sister who is a minute younger than me! This has definitely impacted my personality. I'd say the most significant aspect of having a twin is having a built-in competitor (while also having a built-in best friend). It has driven me to constantly push myself in every way. This experience truly makes me appreciate being in environments where I'm surrounded by people who encourage my growth!
