Goizueta's David Schweidel talked in detail with Appen Media's Joshua Wilson about negative campaign advertising.

Schweidel has spent years studying how political advertising shapes voter behavior. He said the basic definition of an attack ad is straightforward.

“Attack ads are focused on your opponent,” he said, distinguishing them from ads in which “the candidate is promoting himself, saying, here is my record.”

Attack ads are not inherently more memorable than positive ones, according to Schweidel, but they tend to trigger the emotions that make messages stick.

Why do attack ads dominate Georgia politics? An Emory marketing researcher and a former Georgia elections official weigh in on the psychology behind negative ads, their effect on turnout in the 2026 primaries and whether anything can stop the trend before Election Day.

I had a great time joining Karen Swim and Michelle Kane on the "That Solo Life" podcast. It was fun to look back at what Kim and I pulled off this summer.

Leff & Associates PR (Kim Speece and I) ran the PR campaign for Decatur WatchFest '26, thirty-four days of World Cup programming on the city’s newly renovated square. That 34-day campaign was 18 months of work managed by two independent practitioners.

The results? Well, they exceeded the expectations of the client and us! There were 170,000 attendees and daily media coverage (close to a billion impressions) throughout the World Cup. We had press from across the US and many other countries with features in USA Today, Southern Living, and Garden & Gun.

And, most importantly, our efforts drove powerful economic impacts for the city's pubs and restaurants, including the best sales day in 29 years for one of Decatur’s most beloved bars.

On the podcast, I take you behind the scenes on how we did it all. I share how we reverse-engineered the timeline and the tactics we used to secure media consistently, and even how we turned a potential crisis into positive media coverage.

I am most proud of how we made this event one of the Atlanta's top tier "places to go" during the World Cup. And the client remarked several times that we far exceeded their expectations.

This validated that experience and judgment can get it done, even when it is just two solo practitioners.

The episode link is below. I hope you will listen and share with other PR friends.

170,000 Attendees Celebrated World Cup ‘26 on the Decatur Square, City Leaders Making Plans for Future

Decatur, August 24, 2026 -- The final attendance numbers are in, and the City of Decatur officially reported today that 170,000 visitors celebrated FIFA World Cup ‘26 at Decatur WatchFest ‘26 on the city’s Square. On average, 5,500 people visited Decatur daily, with almost 11,000 on peak days, enjoying 72 World Cup matches and 34 days of music and other event activations.

“The attendance and impact of Decatur WatchFest ‘26 on our local businesses far exceeded our expectations,” said Decatur City Manager Andrea Arnold. “One of our goals was to showcase Decatur to people beyond our zip code, and the results show that 75 percent of our visitors came from the greater Atlanta area and beyond.”

Decatur WatchFest ‘26 - By the Numbers

Many Decatur businesses saw their best activity in years, with some even reporting they had their best days since they first opened.

• “For Siam Thai Restaurant, this has been the best summer we’ve had in the last five years. The Watch Fest brought an incredible number of visitors to downtown Decatur, and our restaurant saw a significant increase in customers throughout the event. The atmosphere was vibrant, exciting, and truly brought the community together.” -- Narit Marajit McCrary, Owner

• “[The World Cup] was a huge success for us with sales that we will more than likely never see again. We thought we’d prepared in the six months leading up to it … but all that prep quickly went out the window after the first weekend! The B**r Garden especially was the big winner.” -- Dave Blanchard, Brick Store Pub

As with Decatur’s Olympics efforts in 1996, long term impact on economic development is expected as new-to-Decatur visitors decide to live, work, and play in the city. City leaders recognize the potential that the new stage and Square renovations have brought to the city and planning is already in progress for other community events on and around the Square.
