Before we had full representation in national government, Black students were already learning how to lead it.

This Black History Month, Alabama State University’s Student Government Association reflects on the legacy that built us. From the founding of HBCUs during segregation to the courage of the Marion Nine, our history reminds us that leadership here was never random — it was necessary.

We stand on a legacy that was fought for.
And it’s our responsibility to protect it, strengthen it, and use it to make a greater impact on our campus.

Ketanji Brown Jackson made history as the first Black woman on the U.S. Supreme Court — a moment built on generations of uncredited Black legal excellence.

For 28 Days: Before the Credit, I reimagined her journey as a movie trailer, because Black history deserves scale, intention, and impact — not just a headline.

This is what honoring history looks like. ⚖️

Cheerleading was segregated too.
Black cheerleaders built their own traditions, endured integration, and changed the culture forever.

This is the history behind HBCU cheer.

The Southern Track represents where the journey began.
Rooted in Southern tradition, this dish honors the foodways Black families carried with them long before migration reshaped cities.

This menu concept is inspired by Granville T. Woods, a Black inventor whose work helped power electric railways and changed how people moved through the world. His innovations made connection possible—yet his name is rarely mentioned.

Every plate is a stop.
Every stop tells a story.

This isn’t just food.
It’s movement, memory, and history—served with intention.

This isn’t just a hair line — it’s a legacy.

From our braids to our locs, our curls to our coils, Black hair has always been designed with purpose. Long before credit, our hair carried history, survival, and identity.

Top Tier was created to honor that.
Black hair care, made by Black people, for Black hair — from oils and creams to tools and essentials that understand our crown.

Our hair is appropriate in every space.
Our crown doesn’t change depending on the room.

Today’s episode is a two-for-one.

Anna Julia Cooper and Susie King Taylor represent two ends of the same fight for education. One taught Black people to read during the Civil War when classrooms didn’t exist. The other became one of the first Black women to earn a PhD, proving Black women belonged at the highest levels of scholarship.

Education wasn’t a privilege for us — it was resistance.
So I imagined their legacy as school supplies: the notebooks, folders, and tools that carried Black knowledge forward when systems tried to block it.

📚 Stay tuned all February.
