20/05 Helsinki, Finland. Our last day in Europe today. Did a bit of shopping. Found the Helsinki sign. Visited the Helsinki library, an architectural masterpiece and community hub, where Hiro beat me at chess but only just. ♟️ Now heading to the airport for our midnight flight to Singapore. 🇸🇬 Laksa here we come. 🍜

19/05 Seurasaari, Finland. An island north of Helsinki connected to the mainland via a white wooden pedestrian bridge, nicknamed “Squirrel Island” because of the red squirrels. 🐿️ With over 80 authentic wooden buildings from Finish history, it’s been a public park since the 1920s. Went to the Helsinki Art Museum (where even the toilets were arty) to check out the Tove Jansson Moomin exhibition. Ended the day with an amazing meal at an Armenian restaurant. 😋 🇦🇲

18/05 Soumenlinna, Finland. Trip to UNESCO World Heritage listed island 15 mins by ferry from Helsinki. Built in 1748 as a fort island to guard Finland (then part of the Kingdom of Sweden) against invasion by sea. 1880 - becomes a Russian naval base for the next 110 years. 1917 - Finland is given its independence. The island currently has 800 residents, the access is a half hourly ferry, but emergency vehicles have an underground tunnel system to the mainland. On the way back we passed a swimming pool where locals were swimming in 10°C water after coming out of saunas. 🏊‍♀️

17/05 Helsinki, Finland (part 2) ⚠️ Booked a tour of Underground Helsinki expecting it to be remnants of the old city before they built the modern city on top. It was not‼️ It was a visit to one of the 5,500 civil defence shelters that are under Helsinki city today. The shelters are up to 5 stories underground & absolutely HUGE, many kilometres long and just as wide. They can accommodate roughly 955,000 people, enough for the city’s entire population & visitors. Dug directly into solid granite bedrock and sprayed with concrete, they’re blast-proof & radiation-shielded. ☢️ Finland‘s 1,343km eastern border is predominantly with Russia, hence the constant vigilance. During peace time, the shelters are used for recreation purposes, but in an emergency, they must be converted into a civilian shelter within 72 hours. The shelter we visited went for 4~5 city blocks, has three soccer fields and a kids play area, a coffee shop, and huge underground area that’s currently being used for parking. Every resident knows where their nearest shelter is, and on the first Monday of every month they test the warning sirens at midday. No pets allowed.😢 The day before we arrived, they detected a drone from Ukraine over the city, and the sirens were activated. What a way to live. Yikes! Apparently a lot of European countries, including Switzerland (which has the most shelters in the entire world) have these shelters as civil defence precautions. Who knew??? ☮️

17/05 Helsinki, Finland (part 1) Amos Rex Art Museum and above ground plaza. The Plaza was a bit of a disappointment because they had an event & it was hard to take photos with all the tents & marquees. Underneath the Plaza is the museum, which had a great contemporary exhibition by artists between the ages of 15 and 24. Then went to the Temppeliaukio Rock Church - built as a result of an architectural competition in 1960-1961 by two brothers who were architects. It’s built directly into the rock and has 180 skylights. Then the Helsinki Cathedral.  stunning from the outside, really plain on the inside. ⛪️ Oh, and we snuck in a visit to the tram museum in the middle of all that. 🚃

16/05 Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮 Arrived to a beautiful spring day 15°C. I didn’t think I’d like this city as much as I do. Went on a sightseeing cruise around all of the islands of the archipelago. Lots of holiday houses on the islands with saunas on their jetties. And the world’s longest pedestrian and cyclist only bridge, over 1km long. The fleet of icebreakers, which without Finland wouldn’t get cargo ships in winter. Finished with a wine at a lovely wine bar in the park, where the locals are all out sunbaking at 7pm at night. 😅
