On a cold Saturday morning in April 2018, WorshApp Co-Founders, Andric "Ric" Copeland, Sr. and Jocelyn Johnson, had a phone conversation not unlike any they had shared before. And much like every Saturday morning conversation between friends, the question was raised, "What are you doing today?"
Ric had asked Jocelyn and Jocelyn was stumped. Normally, a simple, "I don't know" would have sufficed. But on this day, Jocelyn knew very clearly what she wanted to do. Having attended a church revival the night before, she wanted more of the very same! She wanted a musical... a revival... anything that would perpetuate the excitement she still carried from the night before. Sharing this with Ric, he suggested that Jocelyn find a workshop or special event to attend that weekend.
It was great advice! And it was Ric's advice that unveiled the question soon to be answered by WorshApp. Where does one go to find faith-based and good faith events/activities going on around them? Ric and Jocelyn searched quickly for an app dedicated to events in the faith space and found - NOTHING! She commented (jokingly) that they might have to create a "Fandango for Faith" and snapped a quick photo to show where it all began, just in case it ever became a big deal...
There's no App for that?!
Ric and Jocelyn spent several weeks scouring App Stores and the Internet for anything that might fit the description of a mobile search tool dedicated to events and activities related to the Christian faith. At best, they discovered websites containing limited lists of information for past events in specific cities. There were databases of churches - similar to White Pages listings - but nothing that promoted or even informed searchers of events and activities outside of "normal" Sunday morning worship services.
How could this be? With more than 150 million Americans asserting a Christian affiliation as of 2010 (https://www.statista.com/statistics/245401/largest-us-christian-groupings-by-number-of-adherents/), surely someone had thought to create an app enabling us to find our faith. Right? Wrong!
Over the next several months Ric and Jocelyn shared innumerable brainstorming sessions - Ric, mostly from the cab of the truck he still drives for Sealy. They tweaked details and tested names like "The Bulletin" - before settling on the global application encompassing all faith, good faith, and wholesome events. And the amazing name, WorshApp? We can thank Ric for that!
They put in the work...
With two full-time careers between them, Ric and Jocelyn initially put in long - and often late - hours to move WorshApp from idea to reality. On New Year's Eve 2018, Jocelyn found herself laid off from what had been the only job she ever enjoyed. This would be the ideal time to move WorshApp from an after-work project into a position of primary focus. Ric and Jocelyn established a division of labor and committed to seeing WorshApp through to the end.
WorshApp was always for the world.
Ric and Jocelyn were gifted the idea of WorshApp. True! But they both are very aware that the idea of WorshApp is a local answer to a global problem. ALL people have the right to the faith that moves and motivates them. WorshApp is a movement. This app takes the faiths that once served to divide the world and uses them to unite people. All people... All faith!
