š The official name is the Tom Moreland Interchange. Almost nobody has ever said that out loud.
Where I-85 meets I-285 northeast of Atlanta, a cloverleaf from 1958 earned the nickname Malfunction Junction. Georgia's answer was a complete rebuild: the contract was awarded in October 1982, work began on January 10, 1983, and the ribbon was cut on July 9, 1987. At the time it was the most expensive contract the Georgia Department of Transportation had ever awarded, and the final cost ballooned to $86 million.
The result is a five-level stack with 12 ramps, 14 bridges and 36 retaining walls, the tallest bridge rising 90 feet. It handles about 300,000 vehicles a day and consistently ranks among the worst traffic bottlenecks in the country. Atlanta grew faster than the fix.
What is your survival strategy for Spaghetti Junction?
