I was in a little country store years ago and saw something I’ve never forgotten.

There’s a kid, maybe 9 or 10, just standing at the front of the store.
Runny nose. Shirt half untucked. Belly out. Hair doing whatever it wanted.
Not moving. Not browsing. Not… anything.

His mom is about 10 feet away. She glances over and says, in a slow Southern drawl:
“Pugsley.”

Nothing.
A few seconds later, a little louder:
“Puuuugggssslyyy…”

Still nothing.
Finally, from across the store:
“Pugsley, do somethin’!”
😂

For whatever reason, that moment stuck with me.

Now, anytime I catch myself overthinking a project… tweaking something that’s already good enough… waiting until it’s “perfect”…
I hear it.

“Pugsley… do somethin’.”

Most businesses don’t have a marketing problem.
They have a Pugsley problem.
Websites that are “almost ready.”
Campaigns that are “about to launch.”
Content that’s been “in progress” for months.
Meanwhile… nothing’s happening.

But it’s not just business.

It’s the side project you’ve been “meaning to start.”
The channel you’ve been “thinking about launching.”
The songs sitting half-finished.
The idea that keeps tapping you on the shoulder… and getting ignored.

At some point, motion beats perfection.
You don’t need flawless.
You need live.
You don’t need a masterpiece.
You need momentum.

So if something’s been sitting a little too long…
You know what to do.

Do somethin’ Pugsley.

Some historical figures had miracles. Others needed a branding agency. 🍀🐱

Yesterday (March 17th) wasn’t just St. Patrick’s Day…it was also the feast day of St. Gertrude of Nivelles - patron saint of cats, travelers, gardeners, protection against rats… and even mental illness.

That’s quite the portfolio.

Yet somehow:
Green beer > cats
Shamrocks > rat protection
Parades >… everything else

Which leads me to one unavoidable conclusion:

St. Patrick clearly had a better marketing team.

A reminder for all of us in business:
Having a great “product” isn’t enough.
If no one knows your story, someone else’s story wins.
Even if your story involves protecting humanity from rats.

Did you know 70-80% of companies active on social media actually plan their content ahead of time? Shocking, right? That means if you’re winging it day-to-day, you’re hanging out with the other 30%, crossing your fingers and hoping for engagement to happen. Spoiler alert: it won’t.

At BETV., we love a good plan. Plan your work and work your plan I always say. We create quarterly content calendars that help you stay on top of trends, keep your messaging consistent, and, potentially make social media funner. (Note: The word “funner” is not considered correct in formal writing, but acceptable for everyday speech. Or social media.)

So, planning ahead lets you:
📅 Post with purpose, not panic
📈 Grow your audience, one intentional post at a time
🎯 Align with your business goals, and bend social media to your will

So, stop scrambling to post that “hashtag ” or “hashtag ” meme at 10 p.m. (personal experience) and let us help you get ahead. Your future self will thank you.

I had an experience with airport security that was so abysmal and frustrating earlier this year that it finally got me to fill out the application for Global Entry and TSA PreCheck. I’ll talk about Heathrow security another time. It’s too painful now. But pretty hysterical in retrospect.

So…if you’ve gone through the application process, it moves a little slow, and my wife and I have a lot of overseas travel coming up over the next few months. Our conditional approval came through, but you have to do an in-person interview. Alas, the Atlanta office had no appointments for months.

Got me thinking. I checked all the other locations in the U.S. and two offices, Miami and Niagra Falls, had quick appointments, so we booked a quick flight to Miami on a Thursday night a couple of weeks ago, did the interviews Friday at the airport, and spent the weekend in South Beach in a condo over The Palace – a rather famous establishment known for its drag shows and entertainment, which often spill out onto the street. Good times, and South Beach is a cultural experience.

Approval came through quickly, in plenty of time for a trip to Iceland in a couple of days. Mission accomplished.

I have a business to run so I should be talking about marketing. So how do you tie TSA PreCheck & Global Entry to marketing?

Regular security lines are like most marketing campaigns. Slow, clunky, and full of unnecessary steps. You may get to your gate, but you’ll be a stressed out hot mess.

TSA Precheck is a streamlined, efficient campaign. Just like skipping the long lines, a well thought out and optimized marketing strategy from a savvy marketing team gets you to your goal faster, with less hassle.

Global Entry? Think of this as your global outreach game. It’s about getting there faster and arriving with all the right credentials to make an impact whether you’re entering a new market or a new country.

So don’t be the one who forgets to take off their shoes, has a 3.4 oz container, or neglected to take that tic toc out of their pocket when it comes to marketing.

Invest in strategies that let you breeze past the competition. Because just like in travel, in marketing, time is money—and we’re all trying to get to our destinations with as little turbulence as possible.

BTW, we were able to get our credentials added to our boarding passes coming back from Miami. Three people in line, tossed our bags on the conveyor, no stripping, and were through in 60 seconds. Joy filled my heart.

Now, if I can just get an upgrade to Delta One for Iceland this weekend…

I've talked to more and more people lately that are using ChatGPT 4 for search more often than Google and other search options. I was curious about the relative numbers regarding volume of search.

ChatGPT has had spectacular month over month growth in the last year. However, if you look at January as an example, ChatGPT had 1.639 billion visitors, Google had 86.57 B and Bing 1.359 B. Even if Chat GPT maintained its current ridiculous growth rate, Google is also growing. And it would take a long, long time to catch up.

So…why would you choose one of the platforms over the other for search? I'll tell you! Here's a more detailed look at when to use Google Search vs. ChatGPT 4:

Google Search offers access to a vast array of information through its indexing of billions of web pages, including real-time news and academic research. It provides varied perspectives on any topic, essential if you're doing research and digesting diverse opinions. It is particularly effective for specific searches that require detailed data like statistics or historical facts, making it a great tool for tracking down precise information.

ChatGPT 4 is great at providing conversational interactions with human-like text responses, making it effective for dialogues and detailed explanations. It maintains context over conversations, aiding in-depth exploration of topics through ongoing dialogue. Additionally, ChatGPT can manage complex queries requiring the synthesis of ideas, and can create detailed explanations, summaries, and a range of content forms.

I use them both and others on a range of searches, depending on the type of info I'm looking for. How about you? Have you been using AI like Chat GPT, Bing, or Google SGE or one of the newcomers like Andi Search, Metaphor, or Brave more often for searches?

An excellent post yesterday from TrueLanguage on accessibility has me thinking about the purchasing power of that demographic.

Did you know that over 1 billion people worldwide live with a disability?

This group represents an astounding $13 trillion in annual disposable income.

Yet, many businesses are missing out on this significant market due to a lack of accessibility in their marketing efforts

An excellent post yesterday from Uli Dendy on accessibility has me thinking about the purchasing power of that demographic.

In fact, 71% of online shoppers with access needs will click away from a website that isn't user-friendly. This is a clear call to action for marketers. We need to ensure our strategies are inclusive and accessible to everyone.

By focusing on accessible marketing, we're not just ticking a box for corporate social responsibility. We're tapping into a vast and diverse market, enhancing our brand reputation, and most importantly, we're making a positive impact on people's lives.

Let's make our marketing strategies more inclusive. Accessibility matters.

I’m always stunned and amazed at how many businesses don’t take advantage of their Google Business Profile. (Formerly known as Google My Business.)

It’s free and user-friendly, takes up a lot of real estate on a search results page, and allows businesses to manage their online presence on Google, the world’s largest search engine.

A well-optimized and regularly managed GBP page can lead to increased visibility, customer engagement and conversions, enhanced reputation, and ultimately, higher revenue.

Let’s take a look at the key advantages of managing your business’s Google Business Page, backed by supporting statistics. I'll give you a complete step-by-step easy-peezy action plan at the end!
