When you're thirty-five negotiating a seventy-million-dollar government contract, and ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐˜„๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—น๐—ฑ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐˜, you realize positioning isn't just marketing language.

It's everything.

We didn't win the bid.

But we were one of only three companies in the final round. I had a one-in-three shot at a deal most small businesses never even get invited to compete for.

Initially, I wanted to be sad for not winning. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that three years ago, I wasn't even in rooms like that at this level.

Now I am.

What changed wasn't hustle.
It wasn't luck.

It was positioning.

Here's how the opportunity actually unfolded.

First, the Prime contractor invited us to participate based on the relationship and trust we had built over time. That didn't happen overnight. It came from years of working together and proving we could deliver. ๐Ÿค

In the first round of the bid, the government evaluated the creative capability and past performance of the bidders. The Prime leveraged our video production and our creative campaigns for the submission.

Our creative work received one of the highest scores in that round. ๐ŸŽฌ

That result moved the team forward, and we were down-selected to compete in the next phase of the opportunity.

As a subcontractor, our role was clear: ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ

After seven years working as a subcontractor, I've learned something simple but important.

Anticipate what they need. Deliver work that elevates their proposal. When the Prime succeeds, the entire team moves forward. ๐Ÿ“ˆ

From there, we learned the field had narrowed.

Eight companies had originally been considered. Now it was down to three.

That meant we had a one-in-three chance at a seventy-million-dollar contract.

We ultimately lost the bid.

But the experience reinforced a few lessons that changed how I think about growth.

Relationships in this space are a slow cooker. ๐Ÿฒ
Trust built over time opens doors that cold introductions never will.

Opportunity usually follows demonstrated value.
People invite you into larger rooms after you've already shown that you can contribute something meaningful.

And when the pressure is high, consistency matters more than charisma.
Decision-makers want partners who remain reliable, calm, and steady when the stakes rise.

Here's the truth.

The founders I worry about most aren't the ones who are struggling.

They're the ones who already have the thing โ€” the program, the proof, the yes from the right people โ€” but they're so locked into the immediate pressure that they can't see it.

They'll tell you their goal is 5 more clients. Or one more hire. Or a better funnel.

And they're not wrong. That's where the stress lives.

But somewhere behind that stress is a play that scales everything. A partnership. A licensing model. Something that changes the whole trajectory.

And it's not that they don't know about it. They do. They'll tell you about it with their whole chest if you ask.

It's that survival mode makes everything else feel far away, even when it's not.

I once rolled out a literal red carpetโ€ฆ for a pitch we didnโ€™t win.

It was for a very large fast-food chain.

I wanted them to feel like royalty walking into the room.

So yes, I bought a red carpet. We laid it out.

My team and I spent countless hours concepting, designing, and building out an entire rebrand before we even presented.

But underneath all the โ€œwowโ€ factor, I was leading from fear.

Fear of this being our first big opportunity.

Fear that we werenโ€™t โ€œenough.โ€

A friend pulled me aside and said something Iโ€™ll never forget:

โ€œCharday, youโ€™re already enough.โ€

That stopped me.

Because the truth was, I wasnโ€™t leading my team with confidence. I was leading them with insecurity. And insecurity only drains people.

We didnโ€™t land that gig.

But I walked away with lessons that still shape me today:

Confidence is contagious. Insecurity is too.

You donโ€™t earn worth through overcompensation.

The best leaders build clarity, not chaos.

And those lessons are exactly what prepared me for the day I secured my first six-figure government contract.
