My wife sent me this off-guard picture, and it hit me different.
I love putting my son inside my white be**er, skin to skin, letting him hear his father’s heart. Sometimes it beats calm, and sometimes it races…because I’m still nervous. I’m still trying to understand that I’m holding a reflection of me. A whole life that came from me. An answered prayer laying on my chest.
Then I looked at this picture and realized one thing…this is what I worked for.
This is what I stood on stages for the last 18 years for. What I got stabbed for, shot for, robbed for, handcuffed for, survived for, succeeded for, and evolved for.
Not so my son could repeat my story …but so he would never have to.
I’m from the streets in real life, and I’ll never be ashamed of where I come from. But my son will never believe he has to be accepted by the streets. Nah, boy. Your daddy already did that. Your daddy already paid that price for us.
Now it’s time for me to show you how to be a man in this world. How to accept everything life sends your way and still move with grace. Still have morals. Still choose love. How to be strong without losing your heart.
I’m going to teach you family, generational wealth, financial literacy, economics, law, health, and the study of human beings. I want you to understand how this world works—but more importantly, I want you to know exactly who you are before the world ever tries to tell you.
There’s so much love inside this little boy, man. Every time I hold him, it feels like God letting me know, “You did the right thing. Keep going.”
This picture ain’t just me sleeping with my son.
This is 18 years of sacrifice resting on my chest.
This is survival turning into fatherhood.
This is the streets ending with me and legacy beginning with him.
Still unbelievable, man.
The most beautiful feeling I’ve ever felt.
