Celebrate Freedom: Aurora’s Action-Packed Juneteenth Weekend is Here!
The Buzz
Get ready, Aurora! This weekend, our city is coming together to honor freedom, resilience, and Black history with an incredible lineup of Juneteenth celebrations. Whether you’re looking to reflect on the deep historical significance of the holiday, support local Black-owned businesses, or simply enjoy some amazing music and food with your neighbors, Aurora is the place to be. It's a weekend all about community, and you won't want to miss a minute of it.
The festivities kick off on Juneteenth proper Friday, June 19th with the annual Scheketa Hart-Burns Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony at Aurora University. Starting at 2:00 PM on the university's beautiful campus, this sacred celebration will feature inspiring guest speakers, dynamic youth performances, and the presentation of scholarships and the Trailblazer Awards. It’s a powerful way to honor our ancestors and uplift our future leaders as the Juneteenth flag is raised high over the city. Also happening on Friday is the city's 5th annual Juneteenth Food Drive, expecting to feed hundreds of local families!
The party really ramps up on Saturday, June 20, at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. Hosted by the African American Men of Unity (AAMOU), the Juneteenth Freedom & Heritage Celebration is taking over from 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Last year, this event drew over 6,000 people, and this year promises to be even bigger! Come out for an action-packed afternoon featuring live music, powerful poetry, and crowd favorites like a high-energy Double Dutch tournament, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, and a chess competition. Bring your appetite, too, because the park will be packed with incredible local food and craft vendors.
