I think one of the biggest mistakes people make in branding when building their business is making themselves the face of their business if they are not a public figure. When I’m doing business consultations I always try to shy clients away from doing this. For instance I had a woman reach out who wanted to start a clothing line using her name as the brand. So I asked her if she was a public figure? “No”, do you have a large following on social media? “No”. So I asked, Why would anyone want to wear your name?
I also see this mistake in promoting. Its one thing if you are using your personal social media accounts to promote product (that’s smart) but being the face in your marketing ads, on your website, modeling your own product on your site, etc. speaks “amateur” to prospective customers. People buy because they trust the branding. And it’s proven that most of your customers will be people who do NOT know you.
Reasons why you shouldn’t use your face for your brand unless you are a public figure:
-What if someone simply doesn’t like your face? It may seem funny but it’s true
-What if your customer is racist or prejudice? (This isn’t personal, this is business)
-Comes off a bit narcissistic
-Speaks “Lacks resources”
I’ve been a successful business owner for 20+ years. If you’re in retail…I’ve had clothing e-commerce sites that would do 20-30k a month (This is full time)
I’ve built an insurance agency from scratch profiting 576k my first year
I’ve owned brick and mortars.
I know what works. Did you guys know that I own a digital marketing agency? To book a consultation, web design, logo, brand consultation and more…www.loveswagco.net
