DANIIL TRIFONOV

On 18 June 2011, in the heart of Moscow, Daniil Trifonov did not merely win a competition; he redefined the sensibility of 21st-century piano playing. In this historic recording from Round I of the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition, we hear the Valse Sentimentale (Op. 51, No. 6) played with a purity that is rarely encountered.

For lovers of the true Russian piano tradition and timeless elegance: this is the very moment a genius emerged. A performance that combines the nostalgia of old Europe with dazzling virtuosity.

Trifonov’s interpretation was noted for its poetic expressiveness, balancing tenderness with subtle emotional depth—qualities that would become hallmarks of his artistry. His performance contributed to his eventual Gold Medal and Grand Prix win in the competition, marking a major turning point in his international career.

Composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1882, the Valse Sentimentale is the final piece in a set of six piano works titled 6 Pieces, Op. 51. It is written in F minor and marked Tempo di Valse. The work is characterized by its melancholic melody, graceful waltz rhythm, and introspective mood, making it a favorite among pianists and audiences alike.

Trifonov’s choice to include this piece in his Round I program demonstrated his affinity for Russian repertoire and his ability to convey deep emotion through nuanced phrasing and dynamic control.

"Music is a revelation higher than all wisdom and philosophy." 🎻

Sometimes, when words aren’t enough, music says it all. 🎹 Ludwig van Beethoven taught us that even in the deepest silence, the loudest melody of the soul can be created.

"The last romantic.
Sergei Rachmaninoff bore the weight of a fading world on his shoulders and transformed it into sound. His hands, legendary for their size, wove tapestries of nostalgia and titanic power. Beyond being a formidable pianist, he was a composer who understood pain and hope like no other.
His music remains the perfect refuge for the melancholic soul. 🍂"

"Regarded as the last great romantic, Rachmaninoff’s music is the sound of the Russian soul made universal. 🇷🇺✨ Beyond the clichés about supposed excessive sentimentality, his work pulsates with contemporary anguish, the nostalgia of exile and an untapped radiance. From his days at the Moscow Conservatory to his final years in Beverly Hills, he kept Tchaikovsky’s tradition alive but with a voice of his own, capable of evoking genuine emotion without becoming anachronistic. His music invites us to feel with our hearts, reminding us that true complexity is not at odds with melodic beauty.

Menahem Pressler Chopin Nocturne C Sharp minor (3rd one)

Pressler’s performance went beyond mere playing. It was an act of reconciliation and hope. After losing his family in the Holocaust, music became his refuge and his mission. Every note resonated with deep compassion and sadness, yet also with a serene joy. His sound, described as ‘radiant’, was not the result of youth, but of a life dedicated to the service of art. For him, the pianist was an ‘intermediary’ between the composer and the listener, and his greatest legacy was to demonstrate that true greatness lies in the depth of the soul, not merely in the speed of the fingers.
