DANIIL TRIFONOV
On 18 June 2011, in the heart of Moscow, Daniil Trifonov did not merely win a competition; he redefined the sensibility of 21st-century piano playing. In this historic recording from Round I of the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition, we hear the Valse Sentimentale (Op. 51, No. 6) played with a purity that is rarely encountered.
For lovers of the true Russian piano tradition and timeless elegance: this is the very moment a genius emerged. A performance that combines the nostalgia of old Europe with dazzling virtuosity.
Trifonov’s interpretation was noted for its poetic expressiveness, balancing tenderness with subtle emotional depth—qualities that would become hallmarks of his artistry. His performance contributed to his eventual Gold Medal and Grand Prix win in the competition, marking a major turning point in his international career.
Composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1882, the Valse Sentimentale is the final piece in a set of six piano works titled 6 Pieces, Op. 51. It is written in F minor and marked Tempo di Valse. The work is characterized by its melancholic melody, graceful waltz rhythm, and introspective mood, making it a favorite among pianists and audiences alike.
Trifonov’s choice to include this piece in his Round I program demonstrated his affinity for Russian repertoire and his ability to convey deep emotion through nuanced phrasing and dynamic control.
