“Should I get it or not?”
How do you figure out whether or not to add a new piece to your closet?
As a personal stylist for women in midlife—borrow my brain.
These are the 5 things I think about before adding something to my closet:
1. What is the garment made of? Natural fibers like cotton, linen, silk, etc. are musts for me, so I always check the label and when I shop online, I always use the material filters.
2. Do I have anything like it in my closet already? If yes, does this piece serve a new purpose or is it replacing the one I already have?
3. How can I style it 3 ways? If I can style every piece in my closet three ways I have endless variety in my closet—and I don’t constantly need to buy more.
4. Does it fit properly? We’re not “making it work” anymore or conceding that a slightly too-long sleeve is okay. No, it needs to fit. And if I can’t commit to getting it tailored, then it’s a “no.”
5. Who is it for? Only pieces for today-me make the cut.
Next time, do you want borrow my brain to see how I determine what pieces to w**d out?
