“It didn't smell like a Sharpie. That was the consumer feedback we received at my past employer, Newell Rubbermaid, when doing product development research on a new ink that would cut the production costs of the popular permanent marker. This feedback, and the lower quality assumed by the customer, indicated that the likelihood of purchase would plummet if Sharpie would have switched to the new ink.
Point is, it may not be the primary functional element of your product that drives a brand, but a small, seemingly insignificant thing that might be overlooked. Do the work to understand what drives preference and usage from the consumer perspective.”
