Camp Westland is an annual event that is equal parts educational seminar and sales team-building event. The camp brings together bartenders, sales staff, journalists, and influencers for a week of learning about how Westland makes its whiskey, the history of the brand, and exploring the Pacific Northwest wilderness and coastlines. We developed the camp's identity and aesthetic, which extended to a wide range of swag items, videos, and educational materials.

A glimpse into Hazlewood, The Paris of Ballard, as explained through a Guide to Social Conduct and General Good Living. Parlor tricks, a Compendium of Ne’re-Do-Wells and Rapscallions, and a thoroughly depraved and filthy worldview masked as pompous upper-crust decorum. Every word is an absurdist attack on manners and good taste under the extreme delusion of having both.

After a long hiatus, Westland revived its beloved Peat Week, a “Week of Reek” dedicated to exploring peated whiskey. This year’s event celebrated two special releases: a whiskey made with peated Scotch malts and a whiskey made with barley malted using Washington peat. As an extension of Peat Week’s circus theme, we developed a story about two rival twin brothers separated at birth. One raised in Scotland and the other in the Pacific Northwest, they came head-to-head in a wrestling match of the ages. We created the characters, identity, packaging, and campaign that brought the story to life.

Our studio, the Egghive, located in the heart of Bainbridge Island, is a bright, airy space that is equal parts study, photography studio, maker space, recording studio, and design workstation. With wall-height windows running along both sides and high cathedral ceilings, it’s an inspiring place to spend our days and host events for the creative community.

Launched as an April Fool’s campaign, Westland’s Inheritance was a parody of the whiskey-collecting subculture that hoards bottles as precious objects rather than spirits meant to be shared and enjoyed. Each bottle was sealed in a wooden box that could not be opened without destroying it, and came with a package of official documents, including an auction catalog, a certificate of authenticity, a release specifications certificate, and a last will and testament that served as a contract for the inheritor, who could take possession of their inheritance only if they promised never to open the bottle. A limited release of only 25 unique bottles was sold at a live auction to the highest bidder, with all proceeds going to charity.

March of Crimes was a hardcore punk band from Bainbridge Island in the early 80’s, and was one of the earliest bands that Ben Shepherd played in before he went on to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Soundgarden. Ben came to us with a recording of early demos that he had thought long lost, but then remembered that, as kids, they had given a tape to Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys. Jello never forgets anything and is an active archivist of punk history, and so they called him up, and sure enough, he still had the tape. This artwork was developed for a planned but never-released vinyl pressing of the demos. While I hope it will come out one day, I can testify that the record is great!

Hazlewood, upstanding stalwarts of decorum, and enthusiasts of the tactile ephemera of days long gone by, needed some new matchbooks. We saw this as an opportunity to bring their sensibilities to their customers as a delightful discovery experience. Knowing that nothing is ever as it seems, and that matchbooks are also a delivery method for clandestine communications, we designed these to facilitate an amorous encounter, a bloody duel, or maybe even both.

A project that involves obscure antique books, meticulous typography in two languages, photography, and an upscale catalog design? Yes please! Our work with Mark Funke books has been one of my all-time favorites and stands as a case in point of presenting beautiful things beautifully, making new beautiful things that are collectible in their own right.

We partnered with Copperworks Distillery to refresh their visual identity and packaging, developing a new custom bottle and labels for their spirits range. For their three evergreen whiskeys, we created the naming convention and sub-identities for each, and extended that packaging system to their other offerings, including Gins and Vodka. The packaging system is built around a consistent primary display panel, with variable colors and type treatments across products that share common dielines for production efficiency. We also extended the system to accommodate a high volume of single-cask and special releases, creating an endlessly flexible design system for future releases.
