It was a pleasure facilitating a strategic planning session today for Neurodiverse Connections. They’re rolling up their sleeves and creating a path to understanding and dignity for neurodiverse individuals by educating communities, businesses, schools and service organizations through training, curriculum, support, and collaboration. I love helping organizations like Neurodiverse Connections build the strategic frameworks they need to succeed and I’m proud to contribute to ND Affirming work. Thank you to Bainbridge Community Foundation for lending us the space for today’s session. Good things are coming! I’m cheering this hard working team on!

Just finished Foundations of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging via LinkedIn Learning. It’s well worth the 39 minutes if you can access it.

Throughout my career, I've been fortunate to work with organizations that prioritize DEIB and follow through with measurable actions. I've worked with professional theatre companies dedicated to social impact theatre and human service nonprofits committed to equitable programs that examine and dismantle bias. I'm continually learning and growing with each new experience and conversation.

This recently updated course was a great update. Well worth the 39 minutes!

According to Forbes Coaches Council member, Sherrie Haynie, in her article, Self-Awareness Offers A Benchmark For A Growth Mindset, “you can't grow without a benchmark understanding of your current state. This is, after all, why companies establish key performance indicators. On an individual level, it entails self-awareness.”

For me, critical thinking + creativity + action is where the magic happens. How about you?

📚What's on your Leveling Up book list?

Looking back, here are the standout books that were instrumental to my career growth over the years:

1️⃣ Standing Room Only: Strategies for Marketing the Performing Arts
by Philip Kotler

Randy Adams (former Managing Director of TheatreWorks and current Broadway Producer) gifted me a copy of this book when I started my position as Director of Marketing and Sales at TheatreWorks. It was a crash course in how to get ‘butts-in-seats’ and the section on Positioning in Part III, Developing the Strategy, has shaped my approach to every job I’ve had since.

2️⃣ Getting Funded: The Complete Guide to Writing Grant Proposals
by Susan Howlett & Renee Bourque, M.Ed., GPC

I won a copy of this book at the Puget Sound Grantwriters Association Conference, and it’s been my go-to guide for years. I found the section on Designing an Evaluation Plan particularly helpful. I've lent it out multiple times and fortunately, it always finds its way back to me.

3️⃣ Forces for Good: The Six Practices of High-Impact Nonprofits
by Leslie R. Crutchfield

I purchased Forces for Good when I took on the Executive Director role for Raising Resilience. As a first-time E.D., the book’s comparison of twelve influential nonprofits was a treasure trove. I just happened to read chapter 6, Master the Art of Adaptation, right before COVID hit and boy am I glad I did! It gave me the courage to trust my instincts and work with my board to launch a program that helped the organization thrive through the pandemic.

4️⃣ Guide to Nonprofit Leadership: Because the World Is Counting on You
by Joan Garry

I bought this one along with the aforementioned Forces for Good. Joan Garry is the founder of the nonprofit leadership lab, and her book taught me about board relations and how to navigate the dynamics between E.D. and Board Chair. I also loved her quiz on what kind of leader you are. Turns out I’m a Spiderman with a sprinkling of Kermit. If you know, you know.

5️⃣ Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know
by Adam M. Grant

I started this while participating in a nonprofit leadership group hosted by Bainbridge Community Foundation during my time at Raising Resilience. I find the lessons from the book seep into multiple areas of my life. “Being wrong isn’t always a bad thing. It can be a sign that we’ve learned something new – and that discovery itself can be a delight.” Here’s to a growth mindset as we examine our core beliefs and remember that embracing our mistakes is essential to progress.
