Oshkosh Area Humane Society Asking for Public’s Help as the Shelter is Full with Felines
Oshkosh Area Humane Society (OAHS) is asking the public to help by adopting a cat or a pair of kittens, as the shelter is full with felines.
As of October 7, OAHS has 151 cats and kittens in care, including 51 up for adoption, 79 in foster care homes and 21 more on-site waiting for spay/neuter, redemption or for space on the adoption floor. Photo, videos and bios of all cats available for adoption can be viewed at oahs.org/available-cats.
In the last 10 days, the organization took in 44 cats from two local homes, in addition to a steady stream of stray cats and owner surrenders. The shelter also has a wait list of cats who need to be surrendered by community members who can no longer care for them.
This year, redemption rates for stray animals have decreased, while surrender requests from community members have increased substantially.
If community members are unable to adopt a pet at this time, they are asked to help by sharing social media posts from the OAHS page (https://www.facebook.com/OshkoshAreaHumaneSociety) and the OAHS Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/oshkosh_humane_society/) page.
There is no time limit on animal stays at OAHS, which means the organization relies on the public to adopt animals before it is able to take more surrenders in. Due to many factors including economic hardship, shelters across the U.S., including OAHS, continue to be overwhelmed with the number of animals needing their help, and are seeing more lengthy stays for many of their adoptable pets. In the first half of 2025, an estimated 2.8 million dogs and cats entered shelters and rescues across the country.*
Oshkosh Area Humane Society’s mission statement is “To provide compassionate care and comfort to animals in need and to build a community that promotes humane treatment of all animals.” OAHS is a private, independent 501(c)(3) charity nonprofit organization. OAHS is not affiliated with, or part of, any other local or national humane organization and does not receive operational funds from any other organization or governmental entity. The organization provides safe shelter and medical care to more than 3,200 animals annually and serves hundreds of community members by taking in pets they can no longer care for, offering low-cost vaccination and microchip clinics, and providing a pet food pantry for pet guardians to keep pets happy and healthy at home. The shelter is located at 1925 Shelter Court, Oshkosh, WI 54901 and offers public visiting hours on Tuesday through Friday from 1-6pm and on Saturday from 11am-3pm. More information about the organization can be found at www.oahs.org.
