Dolly Parton passed away today at 80, and if you run a small business, her story is worth sitting with for a minute.

She wrote her own songs and kept the publishing rights when that wasn’t the norm for women in the music industry. She co-founded her own theme park and kept an ownership stake in it. She built a media company, a foundation, a product line, always as the owner… never just the face.

She also founded Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a nonprofit that mails a free, age-appropriate book every month to enrolled children from birth to age five, to help close the literacy gap before kids even start school. That program is active right here in our own community: Batavia United Way partners with the Imagination Library to get free books into the hands of local kids.

Her nephew Bryan Seaver said it best today: she never saw a door she couldn’t open, and the doors she opened made and changed history.

That’s the thing we see in this community every single day, women who build something that’s actually theirs, protect what they’ve made, and hold the door open for the next person behind them. Rest easy, Dolly. Thank you for showing us what it looks like to own your work and give back while you’re doing it.

So thankful for local artist Sarah Engel for fixing up this wall a bit! We loved her original floral butterfly and love it now with double the flowers!

If you come to our 4th Anniversary Party on Friday we hope you’ll take a pic with the new art!

All the kiddos in the Fox Valley are *finally* back in school so now it’s back to work for us small business owners! It was nice to sit down for a couple of hours without needing to worry about getting our kids here or there!

We did a bit of planning for some events we will be hosting this fall. Our full schedule will be released next week on Friday, August 28th at our 4 Year Anniversary Celebration. We will see you there, right? 😉 (Bribe: The first 25 people in attendance get amazing gift bags. A hint of just one item that’ll be included in the bag is featured above.)

Anyhow, back to work, fellow amazing small business owners! Q4 is just around the corner. Let’s finish this year out strong and in charge! 💪💪💪 (And if you need help… that’s why we are here! ♥️)

There’s something pretty powerful about simply getting in the room. ❤️

Last night we took Start Something Studio networking on the road to Rosie’s Color Studio, and this is exactly what we love to see - conversations happening, introductions being made, old connections catching up and new ones beginning.

Because you really never know who you’re going to meet when you get out from behind your desk and put yourself, and your business, out there.

A future client?
A referral partner?
A collaborator?
A new business friend?
Someone who knows exactly the person YOU need to know?

Thank you to Rosie for opening her beautiful space to us and to everyone who came out and made the night so much fun.

Ladies who joined us: tell us in the comments!
Who did you meet or reconnect with last night? Tag them!

And if networking makes you a little uncomfortable…come anyway. We promise, you won't be the only one.
