Happy 182nd Birthday, Arkansas!
History is important to me. It’s one of those subjects that I loved in school, and could get totally immersed in. Those that know me know that I am part of both the Independence County Historical Society and the Batesville Genealogical Society. I love to research my ancestors...some of whom I know were in Arkansas before it became a state. Sometimes I stop to think about what the land around here looked like back then...mostly woods, wooley and wild looking! There were more bear and bobcats, I’m sure, and wild turkeys and doves. The deer probably weren’t as plentiful as they are today, because of the bear and the bobcats! There may have been some French and Indian fur traders here and there, along with my folks. I know that one of mine set up a whiskey making operation up around the Calamine area, something that one might not do today, but back then it was quite common. It’s fun to think about what they might have looked like, how they may have conducted business (nothing like today - that’s for sure!!), how the women were maybe kept at home and how they worked the farms just as hard as the men did.
I’m proud of the folks that helped Arkansas grow into a state, those who helped it prosper. The small business man on Main Street (who may have thought that he was pretty up-town!), the county courthouse on the Square, the many small towns and villages that made up early Arkansas. Thank you to my ancestors that had a hand in the making of a great state, one that I’m proud to call “mine”. Happy Birthday, Arkansas!!
