Steaming plates arrive from the kitchen, the hum of conversation ebbs and flows, and owner Christine Cummings greets customers with a warm smile.

For 85 years, people have walked through the doors of Bay Street Jewelers looking for something special. Sometimes it is an engagement ring and the beginning of a marriage. Other times, it is an anniversary gift, a family heirloom in need of new life, or a piece of jewelry meant to mark a moment someone never wants to forget. But for Mark and Terri Stokes, the best part has never really been the jewelry. It is the people—and the stories that come with them. “The store speaks,” Mark says. “We share people’s lives.”

Over the last year, the restoration of the 1411 North Street Inn, also known as the Emil E. Lengnick House, has been completed. This beautiful 120-year-old home has passed through several owners, serving as a private residence for almost a century. In 2000, the home was purchased and opened as a bed-and-breakfast in 2001 before becoming formally known as the North Street Inn in 2002.

Chris Crooke and Janie Ephland probably had no idea of the floodgates they were about to open when they joined the effort to get the fledgling Beaufort County Walk for Water off the ground 10 years ago. But what started as a trickle of interest has gradually grown into a deluge of support for arguably one of the most important humanitarian efforts worldwide: access to clean, safe water.
