Maintenance Tip Monday: Why Overseeding in the Fall Matters

If your lawn is looking thin or patchy, fall is the perfect time to give it a boost with overseeding.

Why overseed in the fall?

Cooler Temps = Less Stress: Grass seed germinates better in cooler weather without battling summer heat.

Reduced W**d Competition: W**ds slow down in fall, giving new grass a better chance to establish.

Stronger Root Development: Young grass gets a head start before winter and comes back thicker and healthier in spring.

Improved Lawn Density: Overseeding fills in bare spots, crowds out weeds, and creates a lush, green lawn.

Tip: Pair overseeding with aeration for best results — it gives the seed better soil contact and room to grow.

Want a lawn that looks thicker, greener, and healthier next spring? Fall overseeding is the key — and now is the time to schedule it

Favorite Plant Friday: Dogwoods

This week’s spotlight goes to a true landscape favorite — dogwoods. Known for their stunning flowers, rich fall color, and year-round beauty, dogwoods come in both tree and shrub forms, making them versatile for any landscape.

Flowering Dogwood Tree (Cornus florida)

Iconic spring blooms in white or pink.

Provides great fall color and red berries that attract birds.

Works beautifully as a specimen tree for front yards or gardens.

Shrub Dogwoods (like Red-Twig or Yellow-Twig Dogwood)

Grown for their striking red or yellow stems that stand out in winter.

Produce clusters of white flowers in spring and berries in summer.

Excellent for hedges, borders, or adding winter interest.

Landscaping Tip: Dogwoods thrive in well-drained soil with partial shade. Pair shrub dogwoods with evergreens to really make those colorful winter stems pop.

Favorite Plant Friday: Hollies

Hollies are landscape classics, known for their glossy green leaves and bright red berries — but did you know there are several types to choose from?

American Holly: Evergreen with spiny leaves and red berries, perfect as a specimen or screen.

Inkberry Holly: Compact, evergreen shrub great for foundation plantings.

Winterberry Holly: Deciduous, but loads up with vibrant red berries that shine in winter.

Landscaping Tip: To enjoy berries, you’ll need both a male and female holly of the same type.

Favorite Plant Friday: Ornamental Grasses

This week’s spotlight goes to ornamental grasses — a versatile and low-maintenance choice that brings texture, movement, and year-round interest to the landscape.

Why we love them:

Four-Season Appeal: Fresh green in spring, full texture in summer, striking seed heads in fall, and graceful movement in winter.

Low Maintenance: Once established, most grasses are drought-tolerant and pest-resistant.

Design Versatility: Perfect as borders, mass plantings, or accent plants.

Wildlife Friendly: Seed heads provide food and cover for birds through winter.

Landscaping Tip: Cut back ornamental grasses in late winter or very early spring, before new growth starts. This keeps them looking tidy and ready to thrive for the new season.

And if you’re ready to add texture and movement to your landscape, we’d be happy to help you choose the right grasses for your space
