On This Day in Union History: The National Labor Relations Act was signed.

For decades, employers could legally fire you for trying to organize a union, spy on workers suspected of union activity, and blacklist anyone who spoke up. There was no real legal protection for the basic right to organize. That changed on July 5, 1935, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the National Labor Relations Act, also known as the Wagner Act, into law.

The Wagner Act established the National Labor Relations Board and addressed relations between unions and employers in the private sector, finally giving private-sector employees a legally protected right to organize, bargain collectively, and strike. It came after years of employers being free to spy on, interrogate, discipline, discharge, and blacklist union members, and a wave of nationwide strikes throughout the early 1930s that made it clear workers wouldn't back down quietly.

The Wagner Act is the legal backbone of the modern American labor movement; it's the reason your right to organize is protected by federal law at all.
