Play the Candy Color Quiz here: https://shew-design.com/quiz/halloween-candy-color-quiz/

Some of you may remember the Halloween cards and custom-wrapped chocolate bars we used to give out. We missed having an excuse to get a little weird every October, so this year we made something you can play.

We took 11 classic Halloween candy wrappers and drained the color. You've seen them your whole life, but can you pick the real palette out of a lineup?

Recently, on vacation, I was at a Matisse exhibit, “Matisse’s Femme au chapeau: A Modern Scandal,” and his use of color made me think of the pushback clients sometimes give when colors don’t traditionally go together. See link below to read more!

Last week, we got to visit the new native plant demonstration garden at the Sudden Valley Welcome Center. It was pretty great to see our signage designs out in the wild. The signs are there to help people connect with the place they love and understand why native plants matter for our community's health. 300+ native plants, interpretive signs along the shore of Lake Louise, and a community that showed up to celebrate it all. Really glad to play a small part in this one.

A brand is more than a logo.

It's the words you choose when you describe what you do. The colors that make someone feel something before they've read a single sentence. The typography that's so right it disappears. The small details that a first-time visitor might never consciously notice — but would feel the absence of if they were gone.

This is what we think about at Shew Design. Not just what something looks like, but what it communicates. Whether it tells the truth about who an organization is and what they stand for.

We've updated our portfolio, and I'm proud of what's there. It's a small selection of the work we've done for environmental organizations, public agencies, and nonprofits across the Pacific Northwest — the clients we love most, doing work that matters.
If you've ever wondered what it looks like when design and mission actually align, take a look.

Design is one of those disciplines where the result looks simple, but the path there rarely is.

A logo that feels obvious in hindsight took weeks of wrong turns to get to. A color palette that just works was probably the third direction we explored. The typography that feels invisible — that's intentional. Invisible is hard.

We like the messy, thoughtful path. We think the best design comes from asking a lot of questions before picking up a pencil, and being willing to throw out something good in pursuit of something right.

Our updated portfolio is live, and one of the projects I'm most proud of is our work with Whatcom Has Hope. It's a good example of what happens when an organization doing genuinely important work has a brand that matches it.

Studio websites are the shoemaker's children of the internet.

We spend months designing sites for other people — thinking carefully about structure, messaging, what a visitor needs to feel in the first five seconds. Then we close the laptop and quietly procrastinate on our own.

I won't pretend we're immune to it. Our old site had been on the "we really should update that" list for longer than I'd like to admit.

But we finally did it. And honestly? Going through the process ourselves was a good reminder of how hard it is — and how much it matters.

The new site is cleaner, more intentional, and reflects the kind of work we love doing: branding and design for environmental organizations, public agencies, and nonprofits who care deeply about their mission.

If you've been curious about what Shew Design does and who we work with, this is the best place to start.
