Today was the 1st Day for Christmas Tree Pick-Up here in Benicia. My Eagle Scout and I still jump in and help out every year as the donations that are gathered through these and our efforts benefit every Scouting Unit in Benicia.

So the donation that you make to have your Christmas Tree picked up curbside sends children to camp, buys patches and awards to build excitement about learning and stays local. So make sure that you get signed up and have your tree whisked away by a burly Scout or Scouter. And they will do so happily knowing that every child in their unit will benefit.

If you haven't signed up already you can do so on the Scouting web site: https://www.flagmapper.com/Orgs/Register.php?OrgDir=beniciascouts&FormDefID=1004

Another scam has come along.

This one involves PayPal Invoices. The invoices appear to come from PayPal. I think they may actually becoming from PayPal, but they are a scam. I got two today, both for $569.99.

Do not pay invoices unless you know what they are for and you have been expecting them. That is just the first test. Also, check to see that you recognize the payee.

Do not be afraid to make a phone call to verify the invoice. A five minute call could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Have a safe day.

There are lots of scams going around email these days. There is an easy way to tell if an email is a scam, check the email address of the sender, the real one.

In the image, the email appears to come from PayPal, but it actually comes from [email protected]. I don't know who that is, but it is definitely not PayPal.

Also, laughably, the address to which my "order" will be shipped turns out to be a Dollar General store in Missouri.

Please do not call the phone number in the email. That is how the scam really gets going. Just delete the email and check your PayPal account and you will see nothing is happening there.

A new twist on an old email scam.

I have been receiving emails claiming my Amazon order has been received and is being shipped. This email claims I ordered something large and expensive. It's a scam. Do not respond.

Here's a new twist. I just received an email announcing that someone, with access to my email, has attempted to change my amazon.com password.

First clue that this is a scam - if someone really did have access to my email, they would not have "attempted" to change my password, they would have changed it.

Secondly, check the "from" email address. It comes from noreply at connecticutshippings.online. If you go to connecticutshippings.online, you will find that it has no connection to amazon.com. My ISP is AT&T and it won't even let me go to connecticutshippings.online. I get a message that I have been prevented to going to a dangerous website (presumably one embedded with scripts to attempt to download viruses to my computer.)

So, now you know. Just toss this email in your SPAM or JUNK folder and disregard it. If you are concerned, change your email password changed and then, contact amazon.com yourself and have that password changed.

Stay safe.

SCAM Alert: Someone just called, pretending to be AT&T.

I asked them directly if they were AT&T or an affiliate. They claimed that they were AT&T. They had some of my account information. They claimed that I signed up for a service and my account was never switched over to that service. The service they were talking about was fiber-optic internet. I have it. They claimed that my account showed I did not have it.

I told them I was going to hang up and call back. They said, "I'm marking in your account that you are declining this free upgrade." This seems to be their way to "get" you. Most people, me included, will accept free upgrades. Why not, right?

So, their threat to mark down in your account that you declined the free upgrade to fiber optic is how they keep you hooked.

Do not give in. If someone claiming to be AT&T or your bank, hang up and call them yourself using a phone number you know to be a correct number to reach them. If the free upgrade is real, the person you call on the phone can give it to you.

Don't get taken in by the Free Upgrade threat. It is a scam.

One of these websites is Apple. The other is a scam. Can you tell which is which? Would you have known to look for the difference right away?

Anytime you get an email asking you to click a link, even if it seems very legitimate, check the link.

The second photo points out the difference. I knew right away there was something fishy with this website. I called Apple and reported the scam.

Now you know what to look for too.
