There’s something about a sunset session that just hits different.

Cheyenne’s session was September 21st — still warm, golden, and calm.

She wanted rural countryside.
She wanted water.
She hoped for florals… but we weren’t sure we’d find any that late in the season.

Halfway through her session, I drove past a late-blooming sunflower field.

We pivoted.

And I’m pretty sure she was glad we did.

We started at an old barn I’ve used before — I knew how the light would fall there.
Then to the sunflower field.
Then to her property with tall brown grasses.
And we ended at the Fever River where she stepped into the water in her summer dress as the sun dropped.

That final 90 minutes before sunset?
It’s magic.

No harsh light.
Just soft golden glow.
Open skies.
Warm tones that elevate everything.

Sunset sessions are planned intentionally — because that light cannot be recreated.

Class of 2027, if golden hour is your vision, timing matters.

I don’t just photograph seniors.

I photograph who they are right now.

Lucas lives and breathes rodeo.

Horses every day.
Lasso in his hand.
Boots, belt buckles, cowboy hat — not for style, but because that’s his life.

On our consult call, he didn’t hesitate.
“I want my horses. I want the arena. I want my ropes. I want my buckles.”

So we built his entire session around it.

We met at his riding arena with his horses. We used everything — the tack, the lassos, the dust, the light. He brought his bow because he loves to hunt. He wore his working clothes and his button-ups because that’s what feels like him.

And at the end of the night, he took me to a local barn filled with saddles, ropes, bridles — walls layered with years of hard work. We added light and created something bold and dramatic to finish the evening.

This wasn’t a “stand and smile” session.

This was his story.
His passion.
His everyday life.

That’s what senior photos should capture.

Before every session — we plan.

Outfits.
Backdrops.
Light.
Flow.

When Camryn told me she wanted her session on their family farm, I already knew the space. I had been there before, so I knew exactly how we could use it.

She sent her outfits ahead of time — a dress, a romper, fun shoes. So I built a plan around each one.

Romper and shoes? The road in front of the house.
Dress? The barn for contrast, plus greenery along the side.
Trap shooting is part of who she is — so we incorporated that too.

Even though it had poured rain before I arrived (and we had already rescheduled once), we trusted the timing.

And then something we didn’t plan for happened.

A rainbow appeared.

Before her session, Camryn had lost her dad in a car accident. Her mom brought a photo of him and some of his belongings so we could incorporate pieces of him into her session.

When that rainbow showed up, it felt like confirmation that this was exactly when and where we were supposed to be.

Planning matters.

But sometimes, the most beautiful moments are the ones you can’t script.

That night was more than a senior session. It was honoring her story.

Before every session, we plan.

Outfits.
Locations.
Light.
Vibes.

I want your senior walking into their session knowing exactly what to expect.

That’s how nerves turn into confidence.

Senior year sneaks up on you.

And then suddenly you’re trying to freeze a season that feels like it’s flying by.

Lila’s family spends their summers on the Mississippi River. It’s not just a place — it’s where they live their weekends. Boats. Sandbars. Sloughs. Sunsets.

So when she said, “I want my session on the river,” I was all in.

We planned for July heat.
For bugs.
For weeds along the embankment.

I packed high wader boots because I knew I’d be stepping into the river. We used their pontoon. Took a flat-bottom boat to grab the canoe. Went up a quiet slough off the Mississippi that was absolutely breathtaking.

She knew exactly what she wanted:
• Sitting in her canoe while I photographed from above
• Laying on a log hanging over the water
• Standing in the river at sunset
• Photos on the dock
• Ending in a flower field at the top of the hill

Her parents trusted the process. They trusted me with their boats, their space, their vision.

There was a lot of planning behind the scenes.

But what they received were images that feel like their summers.
Their river.
Their season of life.

That’s what senior photos should be.
