Most Americans who were alive can answer one question without thinking:
Where were you?

I’ll tell you where I was.
I was a Federal Air Marshal on September 11th, 2001 at the FAA Tech Center in NJ. 

There were less than 35 of us in the whole country that morning. We were not on domestic flights. I had just returned from a conditioning run in the woods when a teammate pointed at a TV screen in the gym and said to me, “Sawman, we’re at war.”

I watched what every other American watched. I watched it with a sick feeling in my gut that most Americans were spared.

I knew two things at once:
First - this was evil. Not a tragedy. Not an accident. Evil with a face, a plan, and a will.
Second - we were not as helpless as the first official story made us sound. The country had people, tools and warnings. The machine that was supposed to stop this was capable of more than it did.

Part of what made that day ugly was not only the destruction and smoke. It was knowing something deeper was happening than what we were being told.

I’m not writing this to settle every argument about that day. I’m writing as a Christian and American patriot who was inside the security world when the towers fell, and who still believes two things can be true at the same time.

Men failed.
And God did not leave.

The nation’s motto after that day was “Never Forget.” Scripture already had a better one: God does not forget His people, and He commands His people to build memorials so the next generation will ask, “What do these stones mean?”

I say, fear does not get the last word. The men who ran into the buildings were brave. The God who met people in the ash is faithful. 

So what do we tell our children and all who will follow? 
What must be passed on is not only that, “planes hit buildings.” It is: 

Evil is real, freedom is NOT free, ordinary men can be brave, the system can fail, but God does not.
