The Perkins Call Canine Center creates a dedicated home for a rare academic program, one designed around the study of human-animal relationships.

A&E + SMA Design planned the facility for Carroll College’s accredited Anthrozoology program, with spaces for hands-on canine training, cognitive and behavioral research, instruction, and campus events. The facility is organized for two linked buildings: the Training Building supports active instruction and large-group use, while the Research Building includes classrooms and research areas planned for long-term adaptability. Between them, a transparent entry foyer and lounge reimagines the historic dogtrot concept, where a breezeway connects two building sections.

Set on the east edge of campus overlooking Centennial Park, the project uses terraced walls to shape the sloping site and connect the building to its landscape.

For Carroll’s students and faculty, the facility provides the space, visibility, and flexibility this nationally distinctive program deserves.

Great projects begin with communities that believe in the future.

Following a successful 2024 bond, A&E + SMA Design is proud to partner with Whitefish School District to help bring that investment to life. Construction is underway on an exciting expansion that includes new classrooms, innovative Career & Technical Education spaces, a central Fabrication Hall for hands-on learning, a hub for student-led business and culinary programs, and a new track and field designed to bring the community together.

The best healthcare spaces are designed around both practical needs and human experience.

Just across from Sidney Health Center’s main hospital campus, an existing office building offered an ideal opportunity to expand care. Its transformation into the new Professional Building introduces modern accessibility, welcoming public spaces, and dedicated Pediatrics and Outreach clinics. Warm finishes, comfortable furnishings and playful moments of color and light help patients and families feel at ease from the moment they arrive.

After a decade without a usable community pool, Butte made a big splash.

Made possible through a local bond measure, the Butte-Silver Bow Community Pool brought swimming back to Stodden Park with zero-depth entry, lap lanes, a lazy river, play features, and two winding water slides. The facilities also include concessions, staff spaces, and locker rooms that also serve local high school softball players who practice in the adjacent park.

Today, it's a lively, accessible everyday summer destination that gives everyone more ways to enjoy Stodden Park.

Laurel's West Elementary expansion grows upward with purpose, using a vertically stacked, two-story classroom strategy to create more space on the existing school site.

At the center of that transformation, the stairway links classrooms with collaboration areas and breakout spaces that support hands-on learning. It also carries the energy of a school day: students on the move, shared spaces filled with daylight, and colorful, durable materials ready for the constant pace of elementary life.

Inside its historic building, YWCA Helena had been doing meaningful, life-changing work with a kitchen that was dark, enclosed, and limited in what it could offer. This renovation gave that work more room to grow.

The new kitchen is bright, open, accessible, and designed for daily meals, shared routines, and connection. It adds capacity, comfort, and a stronger sense of home for the women who live here.

Part of a larger effort to improve accessibility, safety, and functionality throughout the building while preserving its historic character, the project received full funding through CDBG, HOME, and Historic Tax Credits.

At Ceremony Salon + Spa, we brought the owner’s business plan to life through thoughtful design centered on the guest experience. The curved reception desk, arched mirrors, and glowing details create a visual path that carries guests comfortably through the salon with an intuitive flow. Generous daylight, Bridger Mountain views, soft colors, and warm materials create an atmosphere where natural beauty is both the backdrop and the inspiration.
