That is because once you take Google’s search engine revenue away, more than half of the group’s $282 billion in annual revenue disappears. Subtract YouTube from the remainder and what's left is essentially a mishmash of loss-making activities.

Google's hardware business—including its Pixel mobile phone, Nest home products and Fitbit wearable devices—doesn’t move the needle, and annual revenue pulled in by its Google Play app store actually decreased, according to its latest 10-K filing.

In September, the company said it would begin shutting down its Stadia video game streaming division, and, to add insult to injury, veteran YouTube boss Susan Wojcicki is stepping down just when TikTok is rapidly growing its audience through a laser-like focus on viral short-form videos.

According to a report published in September by the Special Competitive Studies Project, China is dominant in some industries, such as 5g telecoms. It makes some 80% of the world’s lithium batteries. But the West is ahead on biotech, cloud computing and ai.

Talent is crucial to competitiveness. According to data from MacroPolo, a think-tank, although 60% of the world’s best ai researchers work in America, over two-thirds of them are foreign (and over a quarter of them Chinese). In contrast, China draws overwhelmingly on domestic talent: almost all its best ai researchers are Chinese, and 70% of them have studied only in China.

The E.U. is expected to finalize a law, called the Digital Markets Act. It would be the most sweeping piece of digital policy since the E.U. enacted the world’s toughest rules to protect people’s online data in 2018, aimed at Big Tech’s power. The policy would affect app stores, ads, messaging, and other everyday tools.
