The longer I’m in this industry, the more I’m amazed at how many people truly don’t understand what PR is… or what actually goes into it.
I know a lot of people think it’s a pretty easy process.
We have a conversation.
I write a press release.
I send it out.
You get media coverage.
I wish it worked that way.
And for those of you doing your own PR or having ChatGPT write a press release and sending it out, let me offer a little bit of a reality check.
When you’re working with a publicist, there are multiple conversations before a press release ever goes out. We’re making sure we’re telling the right story, finding the right angle, and asking if it’s actually something the media would be interested in.
Oftentimes, I’m even touching base with media I trust as a sounding board before we pitch.
Then there’s the media list. And let me just say i’m not pulling from a generic database. Every list is curated based on the client, their location, the story we’re telling, and the outlets that actually make sense.
For example, right now I’m representing an economist and a psychic medium.
Those could not be two more different worlds—and obviously require completely different strategies and media lists.
Trust me—it’s not a couple hours and you’re done kind of thing.
If this is making you rethink how you’ve been approaching PR, let’s talk.
