“This officially ends any appellate avenues that they have. They’ve gone as high as they can go. Now we go back to the district court in Grand Rapids, and really, the next step from our perspective is trial.”
A major qualified immunity case tied to the 2020 George Floyd protests in Grand Rapids is now headed back toward trial after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear former GRPD officer Phillip Reinink’s appeal.
The lawsuit stems from a May 30, 2020 incident in which Reinink fired a Spede-Heat tear gas canister at Sean Hart during the protests, injuring him. Ven Johnson Law attorneys Ven Johnson and Chris Desmond, who represent Hart in the excessive force lawsuit, spoke with 13 On Your Side following the decision and discussed next steps in the case.
