Fire season air quality index stats from 2006-2026. Do you notice a trend?

2006–2011: Typically fewer than 5 unhealthy smoke days per year.

2012: First major modern smoke season (Trinity Ridge Fire).

2017–2021: Smoke seasons became much more frequent and severe.

2024: Estimated to be the worst year in the past two decades, with nearly a month of unhealthy air.

2026: Already a significant smoke season, though not on par with 2024.

The estimated ranking of the worst smoke years is:

2024: ~28 unhealthy days
2020: ~24 days
2017: ~20 days
2012: ~18 days
2021: ~18 days
2018: ~15 days
2016: ~12 days

The EPA has not published a single official table of annual "unhealthy smoke days" going back to 2006, so the values above are best estimates compiled from EPA AQI records, Idaho DEQ monitoring, wildfire reports, and historical smoke archives.

They should be viewed as approximate rather than official counts.

😷 If it feels like Boise is covered in smoke... you're not imagining it.

The Treasure Valley is currently under an Air Quality Advisory, with air quality reaching Unhealthy levels in many areas. The thick smoke isn't coming from one local fire. It's being pushed into Southwest Idaho by winds carrying smoke from multiple large wildfires burning across Oregon and Washington, with additional smoke from fires elsewhere in the region.

🔥 More than 15,000 lightning strikes recently ignited 100+ new wildfires across the Pacific Northwest, creating massive smoke plumes that have spread across several states.

If you can:
• Limit prolonged time outdoors
• Keep windows closed
• Run your A/C or air purifier with a clean filter
• Take it easy if you have asthma, heart, or lung conditions
