🔥Hantavirus Cases Reported on MV Hondius.

Health authorities are investigating a reported cluster of severe illnesses aboard the MV Hondius, a cruise ship traveling from Argentina toward Cape Verde. Several passengers developed serious respiratory symptoms consistent with Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS).

🦠 What Is Hantavirus? (CDC Overview – Updated May 23, 2024).

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

■ Hantaviruses are a family of viruses found around the world that can cause serious illness and death.
■ They are spread mainly by rodents.
■ Most hantaviruses are not transmitted from person to person.
■ In the United States and the Americas, Hantaviruses can cause Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) — a potentially severe disease that can damage the lungs.
■ Other hantaviruses can cause Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), which primarily occurs in Europe and Asia.
■ A type called Seoul virus, which causes HFRS, is found worldwide, including in the United States.
■ Non‑HPS hantavirus infections can also occur, causing non‑specific viral symptoms without cardio‑pulmonary complications.

CDC advises clinicians to test for hantavirus in patients with compatible symptoms and potential rodent exposure, and to contact state or local health departments for guidance. CDC’s Viral Special Pathogens Branch (VSPB) is available for consultation and diagnostic support.

🚨 DOJ: IBM to Pay $17.077 Million in Federal Anti-Discrimination Settlement 🚨

The U.S. Department of Justice announced that IBM will pay $17,077,043 to resolve allegations that the company failed to comply with anti-discrimination requirements tied to its federal contracts.

Federal contractors must certify they will not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, or s*x, and must ensure equal treatment in hiring, promotion, and employment practices.

According to DOJ, the government alleges IBM engaged in discriminatory practices, including:

■ Exact practices DOJ alleges:
- Using a “diversity modifier” that allegedly tied bonus compensation to meeting race- or s*x-based demographic targets.

- Adjusting interview criteria using “diverse interview slates” and other methods that allegedly considered race or s*x in hiring, transfer, or promotion decisions.

- Setting race- and s*x-based demographic goals for business units and taking those characteristics into account when making employment decisions.

- Offering certain training, mentoring, partnerships, leadership development programs, and educational opportunities only to employees of specific races or s*xes.

■ DOJ’s position:

This settlement is the first resolution under DOJ’s Civil Rights Fraud Initiative, launched in 2025, to enforce anti-discrimination requirements in federally funded work.
