Modern design isn’t about chasing trends—it’s about making thoughtful choices that leave your website feeling fresh and elevated.

So what actually makes a site feel modern? Here are 5 of my go-to tactics to modernize a website:

1. White space – Giving text and images room to breathe directs attention to what matters most.
2. Subtle movement – A little animation goes a long way. Think hover effects and gentle transitions that make your site feel alive—without overwhelming.
3. Full-width layouts – Gone are the days of narrow, boxed-in websites (hello, 90s). Modern sites expand edge to edge for a clean, immersive look.
4. Font style mixing – Playing with font styles, weights, and sizes adds personality and guides the eye through your content.
5. Oversized text – Don’t be shy! Big, bold headlines feel confident and instantly modern.

If your site is starting to feel stuck in the past, let’s change that. I love helping businesses modernize and elevate their online presence.

A moment of vulnerability here: I recently had a brand photoshoot with my husband/collaborator Loyal Creatives and it forced each of us to face our respective insecurities in a way that was very uncomfortable. But we each grew from it and, in the end, I have a small collection of brand photos which I can use to support my business.

And these photos definitely match my vibe! They're dark and moody but somehow also friendly. It feels good to have brand photos that match my aesthetic and that I know without a doubt no one else has!

I’ll admit that I’ve prettied these up with Photoshop. While I appreciate being authentic, I also am a perfectionist who doesn't want to show the worst parts of me to the world. I'm not ready for radical self acceptance; I'm still trying for self-improvement. But until then, knowing the importance of showing up for my business, I'm doing it any way I can.

And just like that, it's Friday.

Hope you all made it through the week and were able to stay balanced and centered.

My week was a little topsy turvy but I've made it out the other side, and with a clean house to boot!

Have a good weekend everyone! 🤍

Can you use stock photos on your website or in social media posts?

Yes! Websites and social media posts with images receive 94% more views than content without visuals. But in order to attract clients, those photos have to be high quality.

• Good: Use graphic illustrations and minimal photos.
• Better: High quality, on-brand stock photos.
• Best: Custom photos taken by a professional photographer.

Sometimes we see the words "brand" and "branding" are used interchangeably but they really describe different things:

Brand (noun)
Brand is the way customers perceive a business. It’s influenced by a customer’s experience with products or services and the business’ branding efforts, such as its website, advertising, and social media presence.

Branding (verb)
Branding refers to the work that businesses do to shape their brand. This includes everything from how quickly you respond to customer inquiries to designed brand elements.

And if I could add another variation of meaning: brand visual identity. A brand visual identity is what a designer can help you craft but it is only one step in the branding process.

Every interaction with your customer is *branding* work which defines you *brand.*

Here's a question: Is "trendy" a bad word?

When developing social media content, should you follow trends or do something different to set yourself apart?

A trend is the feeling of the time. So if you set yourself too far outside of it, you risk alienating your audience. They won't understand you and worse– if you're a business that relies on style– they won't trust you with their business.

But, on the other hand, if you slavishly follow trends, you risk blending in with the crowd. And if you stick with the trend a moment too long, you risk looking out of touch and dated. And again– if you're a business that operates on providing an aesthetic– you may lose business.

I was talking to a friend about this recently especially in regards to trending audio for Reels. Jumping on every audio clip to create your own version can be exhausting. But the truth is, using trending audio can give your content a bump in views.

So try to stay balanced. Stay true to yourself by only choosing social media content trends that are in line with your brand and add a healthy dose of your own brand personality.

It can be shameful to admit when your goes through a slow time. But it's important to remember that businesses ebb and flow.

So what to do during a slow time in your business? Here are a few ideas:

1. Work on education
Take an online course or work on a personal project which refines your skills.

2. Think about marketing
Marketing efforts often fall by the wayside during busy times to take this time to create content for social media, re-write your services page, update your portfolio, write a blog post, or update LinkedIn.

3. Refine your business process
Think about parts of your work or client process that you could automate or ways you can make your client’s experience better.

4. Relax!
Forget toxic hustle culture and take advantage of this time to relax and recharge. Then when business does pick up, you'll be ready!

Writing an About page can be the most painful part of writing content for your website.

In today's blog post, I bust some myths about who your About page should *really* be about and give you some guidance to what to write.

Some key takeaways:

01. Focus on your client
01. Introduce yourself
03. Show your personality
04. Show your face
05. Location is great for connection
05. Don't forget a CTA

Brand and website design for Samantha Falk Communications.

Samantha Falk is a Vancouver-based communications professional offering comprehensive public relations and media relations strategies.

Sam wanted a timeless, professional brand that could grow with her business. I created a wordmark logo which combines two logo types– one classic, one modern– and then pulled it all together with this sexy little monogram.

The website is simple but clear and uses a monochrome palette and the warm tones of marble.
