Influencers are the new rock stars. With massive followings, their reviews or a brief remark can make a product popular almost overnight.

No wonder brands and large companies invite them to events and queue up to sponsor them.

But how do you tell if an influencer's fan base is real or fake? Who is an opinion leader worthy of your resources and who is an impostor?

The answer is simple – engagement rate. This metric indicates how engaged followers are with a user's content. It's calculated as total engagement divided by total followers, multiplied by 100.

Divide the total number of likes and comments on the 10 most recent posts of an influencer by the number of their followers and multiply by 100. 10 percent or higher indicates a good response from the audience. Anything less, and you should find someone else.

Hey! This is and I want to tell you a story.
This happened long ago on the other side of the world, but it's worth sharing.

I had a client who sold sausage casings and sausage making supplies online. Although he mostly generated revenue from his offline shop, he was looking to boost online sales to grow his business. Unfortunately, his attempts failed – his main competitor had several years' head start and a more established name. Besides, there were other competitors.

My job was to transform his social media pages into viable revenue sources and find other ways to increase sales.

My research revealed that every competitor's fan base had the same core of followers who loved sausage-making and subscribed to every social media page selling related products. In addition, competitors weren't producing any content other than what was contributed by their customers.

My solution? Move away from our competitors' followers and build our own fan base. To achieve this, we turned to content marketing. Swipe carousel to learn more about my approach.

Our efforts took several years to deliver full results. But eventually, my client's customer base shifted from wholesale to retail, resulting in higher revenues and allowing him to remain afloat and thrive during the pandemic, when restaurants stopped buying his products.

Many believe that a burst of eye candy will get those sales flowing, but that’s not the case.

While design is important for the image and brand of your business, posting sleek graphics won't make your customers purchase more. In fact, posts with just graphics hurt conversions. Why? People come for content and value, not superficial decor.

So, when choosing between spending money on a cool graphic or allocating it to purposeful content and copy, go for the latter. Understand your audience and craft messages they will relate to.

Today I'd like to discuss three digital marketing tactics that business owners might not always love yet can also be most effective. And if you aren't doing these things, you may be missing out on many potential customers.

The first is building your personal brand. Look at some of the most successful companies – many owe their success to the personality and passion of their founders or CEOs. Some of these large firms might not have been as successful without the strong presence of their founders. What's more, your competitors are already doing it, spreading their values across the web. So why not give this a shot? Your ideas, experiences, and interests can help you establish a connection with customers and make you more relatable. And today, modern media platforms and content networks make it very easy to establish your personal brand and reach your target audience.

The second is content creation. Some construction and interior design firms I worked with had portfolios set up but didn't change them for years. Sure, creating materials to share your new projects can be time-consuming, and posting your latest work on Facebook often doesn't bring you immediate sales. Don't forget though, your content shows potential customers that you are in demand and stay up-to-date.

Finally, reviews. Every business owner knows that reputation matters. Yet, remarkably few invest in managing their reputations. Human psychology is such that we are more likely to leave reviews when things go wrong than if they go well and it may be hard to get people to share their positive experiences about you on social media or Yelp. But it's well worth it. Reviews help other customers choose products and services. Help them choose the right ones.
