I want to talk to you about the three ways to grow your business, and this is a big topic, so I’m going to split it into three different posts.

The first way to do this is pretty obvious: Increase the number of clients you work with.

First off, you need to have a “marketing system” in place. And this is more complex than “marketing”.

“Marketing” helps people find your business. A “marketing system” guides potential clients on a journey into becoming a paying client.

Having a marketing system set up allows you to have a predictable stream of new clients. Your business simply cannot survive on a random batch of inquiries that you have no idea where they came from.

Another way to get more clients is to simply offer more services. For example, if you work with people struggling with depression or anxiety, you can decide you want to start a support group that you can offer to new or existing clients.

Lastly, referrals are the lifeblood of our industry, so be sure to leverage your network and local health professionals to see if they can send you potential clients.

Differentiation could be in your value proposition, pricing, the type of clients you serve, etc. As Peter Thiel quotes, “you can either be 10x better than your competitors or be different.”

Do I build my website myself or do I hire a professional?

That’s a question I get asked a lot. And there are three different ways to go about it:

1. You can do it yourself (DYI - Do It Yourself)
2. You can hire a professional to build it (DFY - Done For You)
3. OR you can hire a professional to build it WITH you (DWY - Done With You

Creating a website in this day-and age is so easy, anyone can do it. There’s tons of inexpensive website platforms like Wix, Weebly, SquareSpace and WordPress, to name a few.

All of these have thousands of resources and templates to walk you through the process.

My favorite platform is Wix by far, and I would first start with their AI to generate a counseling or coaching website for you, switch to advanced mode and take it from there.

But if you don’t mind investing the money and save the time and just want to get it done quickly, then go ahead and hire a professional! You can tell the professional the general “feel” you’re looking for, the goals you want for the website, and a few details about the functionality and they’ll generate the best results possible for you.

Writing a text (especially a text that actually works) for your website can be tricky because counselors and coaches get stuck on one thing: They think the text needs to be about them.

Your website is not about your certifications, your diploma, or the different modalities you work with. Those all have their place, but should not be the forefront of your website.

When a potential client opens your website, they need to feel understood.

They need to feel like you get them.

They need to feel like you have empathy for their struggles.

They need to feel like you can help them.

“But how do I do that?”

First imagine your perfect clients and the struggles they would face, the questions they’re asking, and the thoughts that run through their minds. Once you can think from their perspective, then you can craft website text to show all of the things I just mentioned, as if you’re having a real conversation with a friend.

When writing your website text, the best way to do this is to write in a conversational and casual way.
And the best way to do that is to address them directly. And this can be done by writing in the “second person”.

Marketing is simply having conversations, while not being there in person.

By addressing the reader as “you”, it feels as if your website is talking to them, so there’s automatically a relationship built before they even consider working with you.

"Working with coaches, I have found that some often don’t want to call themselves “coaches” because they feel they are doing a lot more than just coaching. And while this may be the case, you still need to SAY IT.

Instead of creating a nickname for the word “coach”, it’s important to be clear with your audience that you are a coach! The key is to use words like, “life coach”, “business coach”, “career coach”… whatever it is you actually do!

This statement needs to go on your coaching website in the logo section. Using a word like “coach” that people actually know and use is also great for your SEO because people aren’t searching for a “life transformer” they are searching for a life coach."
