Less supplement. More total feed allocation.

That is the useful lesson in this Southern Dairy Hub snapshot—not a claim that one herd is more profitable.

As at 14 October 2026, silage plus in-shed feed totalled 7.3 kg DM/cow/day for the Standard herd and 2.6 for the Future herd. But the Future herd had more pasture allocated, bringing total allocation to 18.5 versus 18.0. The systems differ, and allocation is not measured intake.

Before comparing feed bills, check the whole ration, dry matter, wastage and what each quote includes. Our five-chart report includes a reusable worksheet:

Which part is hardest to measure on your farm: pasture allocation, feed losses or the full cost of feeding out?

The last 110 acres can take very different amounts of workable time.

At 10 productive acres an hour and five workable hours a day, the example needs 2.2 workable-day equivalents. At eight acres an hour and three hours a day, it needs 4.58.

These are hypothetical planning inputs, not a weather forecast. Add delays only if they are not already included in your work rate—and check unloading, drying and storage capacity too.

Would a higher milk price actually protect your milk cheque?

A 2.5% fall in saleable litres needs about a 2.56% price rise just to preserve revenue. At a 10% volume fall, the required rise is 11.11%.

These are illustrative calculations, with costs held unchanged—not a price forecast or a profit estimate. Winter feed and other changing bills need their own budget lines.

Our five-chart guide includes a worksheet for your own volumes and costs:

A dairy milk budget can weaken even when the price per litre rises. If you sell fewer litres, a small price increase may not protect the milk cheque. In our hypothetical example, . . .

Stress-test your dairy milk budget with five charts and a worksheet. Calculate what price offsets fewer litres and net extra costs using clear scenarios.

A full reservoir headline and a farm water budget answer different questions.

Victoria’s newly released 2024–25 accounts show irrigation use rose 28.7%, while accounted water availability fell 39.5%. These are historical figures with different definitions—not today’s allocation for your farm.

Our guide includes five charts and a copyable worksheet. In one clearly hypothetical example, 100 hectares needing 4 ML/ha has an 80 ML gap when usable supply is 320 ML.

Which input do you find hardest to pin down: crop demand, usable supply or delivery timing?

What should a higher diesel price actually add to a custom-work bill?

In our Illinois-based example, diesel at $5.76 instead of $3.00 per gallon adds about $3.00 an acre for corn combining—or $1.90 for soybeans. The chart shows diesel-only adjustments, rounded to the nearest ten cents. These are not full contractor prices.

The benchmark comes from USDA Illinois distributor asking prices for the week ending October 16, 2026. Your delivered price and fuel use may differ.

Before agreeing a surcharge, ask which fuel price is already included in the starting rate. Are you comparing the same job scope?
